Money Magazine
Rates Detroit

Detroit may not be heaven,
but some locals might
dispute that it's the 92nd
best American city in which
to live.
The ranking was done by
Money magazine, which
rated the quality of life in
the nation's 300 largest
metropolitan areas. Cities in
the west and northwest did
best: seven of the top 10
cities were west of the
Rockies. Among them were
Tacoma, Sacramento and
the Los Angeles/Long Beach
area.
The best-rated city in the
nation was Bremerton,
Wash., whose 180,000
residents have a 4.6 percent
unemployment rate and 136
sunny days a year.
The five worst-rated cities
were all from the northeast's
floundering Rustbelt:
Waterbury, Ct., Pawtucket,
R.I., New Britain, Ct., Fall
River, Mass., and, worst of
all, Allentown/Bethlehem,
Pa.
Among the factors Money
considered were a city's
economy, environment,
housing and jobs, health
resources and crime rate.

Is Spike Lee
Anti-Semitic?

Screenwriter/director
Spike Lee has recently been
accused of being anti-
Semitic because his current
film, Mo' Better Blues, in-
cludes two Jewish jazz club
owners, the Flatbush
brothers, who exploit black
musicians. Now, Village
Voice columnist Nat Hentoff
joins the anti-Lee forces.
The brothers, writes Mr.
Hentoff, "are caricatures,
vicious cartoons, vintage
stereotypes of the grasping,
soulless Jews of the Middle
Ages ..."
The Voice columnist, who
is also a veteran jazz critic,
recalls Jewish club owners
who "nurtured the careers of
unknowns and refused to
abandon jazz for more im-
mediately popular and
profitable music." He also
cites a Jewish club owner
who was the first in New
York to "openly and de-
fiantly" integrate the au-
dience in a club.
While Mr. Hentoff admits
that some Jews exploited
black musicians, he charges
Mr. Lee sees all Jewish club
owners as "alike. And so, in
this movie, the Flatbush
brothers represent the only
jazz club owners the au-
diences for the movie are
ever going to know."
