reason to divide us. The im-
mediate past problems were
unfortunate. But I'm all for
moving forward, only mov-
ing forward together.
"Previous Catholic leader-
ship in Detroit has had good
relations with the Jewish
community," he continued.
"As I told the audience, I
will take the challenge of
making our relations with
the Jewish community even
better than they have been."
The archbishop made a
good impression on many of
the community leaders who
attended on a night when a
severe thunderstorm was
delivering heavy downpours
and power outages.
"What struck me was that
the archbishop came across
as a down-to- earth person,"
said David Gad-Harf, exec-
utive director of the Jewish
Community Council. "This
is an opportunity for both
communities to address
issues that we have in com-
mon and work together on
them."
Rabbi Roman's speech put
the evening into perspective.
He talked of his late grand-
father, who would say it was

"absurd" to think that Jews
and Catholics could ever
realistically get together.
The rabbi said he wished his
grandfather could see
Shaarey Zedek that evening,
and that the absurdity is
that Catholics and Jews
could be apart.
"Despite our differences,
we'll get together, for our
own good," Rabbi Roman
said.
Rabbi Groner said he was
pleased with the goodwill of
the archbishop's speech and
the ovation and reception
the archbishop received from
the largely Jewish audience.
"The archbishop spoke
wonderfully about his con-
cern for improving the dia-
logue between Catholics and
Jews," Rabbi Groner said.
"This is an important oppor-
tunity for a real dialogue."
The archbishop agreed.
"We've reached a point
where we have to stop poin-
ting fingers at each other
and placing blame on one
another," Archbishop Maida
said. "This is a real chance
for people who believe in the
God who revealed himself to
the children of Abraham to
deliver a message to human-
ity . . . together." ❑
