After a Detroit debut, the
Crunch Bird took off with
great success in New York
and eventually landed in 100
theaters nationally, including
some in Hollywood, qualify-
ing the short for Academy
Award contention.
In a field dominated by big
production companies, Mr.
Petok and colleagues didn't
even expect a nomination.
"But strange things happen,"
he says.
Ultimately, Mr. Petok
created 25 more shorts involv-
ing the Crunch Bird, who
presently appears on televi-
sion in Great Britain, Por-
tugal, Denmark and Van-
couver. In the United States
and Canada, Crunch Bird
now functions mainly as an
ice-breaker for business
meetings and conventions.
Mr. Petok's cartoon style is
not computer-generated, but
a product of classic craft. His
work is hand-drawn frame by
frame. And there are 1,440
frames in each film minute.
Given a recent renewed in-
terest in the art of animation,
as well as a reappearance of
feature shorts in theaters, the
Crunch Bird Film Festival
will provide a timely
retrospective of pioneering
work in those genres.
"We wanted to do
something special for so-
meone — Ted Petok — who
has brought attention to this
community by being the first
local Detroiter to win an
Academy Award," says
Rosalind Lullove Cooperman,
president of September Moon
Productions Network, which
is hosting the event.
All proceeds from the Sept.
14 premiere will go to a Ted
Petok scholarship fund for
young animators and film-
makers. ❑
