Voice Connector Service
Has Best-Ever 1st Week

STAFF REPORT

V

oice Connector, the
new electronic voice-
mail service offered by
The Jewish News in conjunc-
tion with its People Connec-
tor personals, registered
nearly 2,400 minutes of user
time in its first weekend of
operation.
The total was nearly twice
that reported by other large
Jewish weekly newspapers.
"That's phenomenal," said
Bonnie Lazar, sales repre-
sentative for MicroVoice
Applications, Inc., the firm
which handles the service
for The Jewish News and a
number of other Jewish pa-
pers.
"No Jewish paper has done
as well at the start," she
said. Papers such as the Nor-
thern California Jewish
Bulletin in San Francisco
and the Jewish Exponent in
Philadelphia reported first-
week tallies amounting to
about half Detroit's total.
The bulk of the total is
from persons who, by dialing
a special 900 number, either
listened to recorded mes-
sages from People Connector
advertisers or recorded their
responses to those personal
ads.
Of the actual 2,403
minutes used on the 900
number, 2,336 were used on
Friday, Saturday and Sun-
day of last week. Sunday led
with 1,000 minutes.
People Connector adver-
tisers are given a code and a
password which enables
them to access the system. If
they desire, they can leave a
two-minute message in the
system for those dialing the
900 number to hear.
Thirty-six of 78 People
Connector advertisers
recorded ads for their voice-
mail boxes on the 800
number, said People Con-
nector maven Shirley Ber-
man, The Jewish News re-
ceptionist. The leading re-
sponse-getter was a male
advertiser with 17 messages
left via the 900 number.
"One woman called to
place an ad in the People
Connector and told me what
a wonderful service the
newspaper is offering," said
Mrs. Berman. The woman
said she used the service to
respond to an ad and liked
the system.
"And we've gotten a lot of
inquiries from males who
seem enthused by the idea,"
Mrs. Berman added.

HOTTEST LEASE DEALS IN TOWN!

Arthur Horwitz, associate
publisher of The Jewish
News, attributed the
outstanding response to
Voice Connector to "the
loyal following the paper has
engendered among
Detroiters.
"We are pleased to be pro-
viding this service to the
Jewish singles of our com-
munity," he said. "We
believe it is a positive tool
for bringing singles together
in these fast-paced times."
There is a charge of 95
cents per minute, billed by
the telephone company, to
those using the 900
number. ❑

Single Adulthood
Is Workshop Topic

munity House.
The three-session seminar,

dividuality that help singles
make it on their own. Other
topics include techniques for
building relationships;
methods to increase con-
fidence and self-esteem and
ways to confront personal con-
cerns by evaluating roles,
relationships and sexuality.
There is a fee. For informa-
tion, call the Community
House, 644-5832.
