The

The Coach-in-Chief position
is a dream job for Greenblatt,
who has worked in public
relations, owned an Oak Park
sporting goods store and is
now a sporting goods consul-
tant. He remembers well the
phone call telling him that
Walter Yaciuk had died and
that USA Hockey wanted him
to succeed Yaciuk as
Coach-in-Chief.
"It was very emotional for
me because it's a plateau; it's
an achievement," Greenblatt
says, but adds the satisfaction
was tempered by the loss of
Yaciuk.
Dave Peterson, 1988 U.S.
Olympic hockey coach and
now the USA Hockey
coaching program director,
says Greenblatt is "actually
the backbone of our program.
He's invaluable to us. I don't
know what we'd do without
him."
Peterson says Greenblatt
gets the job done without
bruising any egos. "He's a
very detailed guy and he's
very personable. He has the
ability to get along with 12
different CAP directors, and
that takes some doing."
In addition to Coach-in-
Chief, Greenblatt has been
Detroit-area coordinator for
open Olympic hockey team
tryouts since 1980. Green-
blatt proudly points to 1984,
when Livonia's Al Iafrate
made the U.S. squad via the
tryouts and played in the
Winter Olympics in
Yugoslavia.
lbday, Iafrate is an All-Star
NHL defenseman for Ibronto,
but in '84, he was a virtually
unknown, 16-year-old junior
player.
Lou Vairo, the 1984 Olym-
pic coach, recalls Greenblatt's
efforts to get Iafrate noticed.
Greenblatt "was the guy who
told me about him and pro-
moted him before (Iafrate)
was fashionable. Sam was
right there behind him."
Because of Greenblatt's
reputation for objectivity, his
opinion was valued. "Sam
always gave an honest
presentation of what was go-
ing on with the Michigan
players," Vairo recalls.
"Everybody benefited
because he wasn't being
parochial."
Vairo, a non-Jew who learn-
ed Yiddish as a kid growing
up in Brooklyn, N.Y., says
Greenblatt has "rachmonis,"
a Yiddish word meaning com-
passion. "He's a terrific guy,"
says Vairo, who has known
Greenblatt for 10 years. "He
has compassion for people. An
honest man. Asks for nothing,
does nothing but give."
All four of Greenblatt's
children, sons Harry and Phil
and daughters Paula and
