Hurry in before Indian summer fades away. The Lowdown erhaps more than anyone else, Richard Nixon con- sistently pops up in M. Hirsh Goldberg's The Book ofLies. For many Americans, Goldberg says, Nixon spr- ings to mind as the quintessential liar of our times. "I did a lot of research on him for this book," Goldberg says. "In many ways, the guy was brilliant. But his lying hampered him, especially with Watergate. If he had come clean, he might have been forgiven and accepted. [President John F.] Kennedy did it with the Bay of Pigs. But Nix- on couldn't do it. It ap- pears he's a bit of a pathological liar." Despite recent revela- tions about Kennedy's womanizing and other improprieties, Goldberg says he found the late president to be a different kind of liar than Nixon. "He fudged the truth," he says. "But Kennedy was honorable when it really counted in terms of political leadership." Goldberg commented on the honesty of other polit- ical leaders of contem- porary times. • Jimmy Carter — "A very honest person. He just wasn't accomplished enough in other key areas of the presidency." • Winston Churchill — "Appeared to be honest. [Dishonesty is] what in- furiated him about Hitler." • Adolph Hitler — "A very open liar. He praises lying in Mein Kampf. Hitler denigrated honesty and thought it was a weakness. In the end, he was defeated by deceit." • Ronald Reagan — "His background as an actor leads you to wonder how he reasonably can separate truth from fic- tion." Goldberg also cited several cases of modest deception: • Despite its Scandina- vian sounding name and maps on its packages showing Norway and Denmark, Haagen-Dazs ice cream is actually manufactured in Teaneck, N.J. Frusen Gladje is headquartered in Philadelphia. p • The Harlem Globetrotters actually originated in Chicago. And despite their name, the team did not travel outside the United States until 20 years after their founding. • Despite Ricardo Mon- talban's claims in com- mercials for the Chrysler Cordoba, there is no such thing as Corinthian leather. • Johnny Weissmuller, the famous "Tarzan" actor who won five gold medals representing the United States in the 1924 and 1928 Olympics, doc- tored his birth certificate and lied about his Ameri- can birthright to par- ticipate in the games. Weissmuller was actually born in Romania. • Christopher Colum- bus kept two sets of books recording daily traveling distance to deceive his crew members who threatened mutiny be- cause they feared the ships would fall off the end of the earth. • Billy Tipton, a well- known jazz musician who had a wife and three adopted sons, was actu- ally a woman. This was not discovered until after his death two years ago at the age of 74. • Gangster Al Capone's business card described him as a "secondhand furniture dealer." • Winston Churchill, because of a previous commitment, asked an impersonator to deliver his famous "We shall never surrender" radio address in 1940. • While working on the movie set of The Ten Commandments, director Cecil B. deMille announc- ed to his large cast of extras that one of the actors died. Although no one really died, deMille filmed the reaction of the extras and used it in the movie for the scene in which the Israelites receive the command- ments from Moses. • Baseball great Babe Ruth's daughter, Dorothy, didn't discover until 1980 that her natural mother was not the slugger's first wife, Helen. Rumors about the identity of Dorothy Ruth's real mother dated back to the early 1920s. • 4)9 .
