Evening Drama

Marc Jacobs,
designing for the
Perry Ellis com-
pany, made his
mark with sports-
wear and coats.
This season, he
turns his atten-
tion to evening
clothes, and comes
up with this
youthful, jazzy
take on the black
dinner suit. The
short, swingy
skirt is cut for
movement. The
newest jacket is
fitted, made even
more au courant
by the shimmer-
ing slash of se-
quined lapels and
pockets. Photo

as well as the cocktail suit especialy
in black is a safe and stunning look.
Dinner suits in black and white
combinations, all-black and jewel
tones are being shown in failles and
satins.Wool crepe is another choice
fabric. It's a light-weight fabric that
can be worn many seasons.

The evening jacket will be the item
to own, whether it's a sophisticated
all-over beaded number for the young
set or a sequined satin baseball
jacket. The evening jacket does
double duty. Not only can it be worn
as a cover-up for the little black dess,
it can be worn as a separate item. It
can also be worn with a chiffon skirt
and a tank top or blouse.
One essential item to wear with that
little black dress is the Chanel-
inspired evening jacket. The styles
range from beaded, solid black
velvet, solid black satin or bright-
colored satin. It can be quilted, which
is very popular. Next in popularity is
the brocade, tapestry jacket.

The little black dress is always ver-
satile according to many local store
buyers. The fabrics range from velvet
and crepe to stretch. Easy-shaped
dresses, some with cut-outs and some
with trim are a young career look.

Most store owners describe the
1990 season as opulent with dinner
dresses, suits and evening gowns in
rich, jewel tones of amethyst, emerald,
ruby and gold.
The accessories are just as lux-
urious as the clothing. Judith Leiber,
world-renowned couturier of hand-
bags has many styles for the season.
Many of the colors ranging from en-
vironmental hues — earth green,
wheat, slate and rosette — are impor-
tant this season. The bags are struc-
tured and smaller.

Lieber's miniaudieres are bejewel-
ed with rhinestones. The clasps are
formed with stones cabochon stones
and pearls. Some of the miniature
bags have whimsical shapes of birds,
seashells and even Barbara Bush's
dog, Millie.
