to make her look
attractive. Since so many of his
customers are visible and socially
active in their communities, this has
given him a national exposure other
American designers may envy.
"I was one of the first designers to
go around the country showing the col-
lection," says Blass. In addition to the
human element of visiting with his
customers, Blass enjoys seeing what
women around the country are wear-
ing.
Blass's client list reads like a Who's
Who of Society. Some of his loyal fol-

of Society, but Blass has
become as much of a
celebrity as his clients.

lowing includes Nancy Kissinger, Nancy
Reagan, Estee Lauder, Claudette
Colbert, Farrah Fawcett, Ivana Trump
and Pat Buckley. It's not a secret that
Barbara Bush wears Bill Blass. Blass is
as much a socialite as the women he
dresses.
Within the fashion world, Blass has
won many awards. He is a three time
Coty American Fashion Critic award
winner and a lifetime member of the
Coty Hall of Fame. In 1987, Blass was
honored with the Lifetime Achievement
Award by the Council of Fashion
Designers of America. He has two
honorary doctorate degrees, one from
the Rhode Island School of Design for
Fine Arts and the other from Indiana
University.
Blass admires Yves Saint Laurent as
a designer. "His clothes are always
wearable," says Blass. On the American
scene, Blass sees Isaac Mizrahi as the
designer of the future. "He has done
his homework," says Blass.
As for himself, Blass will continue
designing. "It's a matter of maintaining
your interest, and I have never become
bored. The moment I do, I will stop. It's
terribly important to have energy and
enthusiasm about what you do," Blass
says.
