Cold Weather
Protection

• BY CAROL SORGEN

From a distance, with the right ski
clothes, anyone can look good on the
slopes. But if you don't take care of
your skin before, during and after you
get outside, even the right outfit won't
help.
• As cooler weather approaches,
take steps to "winterize" your skin.
Use moisturizing cream (even oily
skins need this) to protect your face
and body against wind, glare, sleet,
snow and ice. Today's moisturizers are
lightweight and easily absorbed; they
don't weigh the skin down but, rather,
allow it to breathe. Good choices are
Clarifiance, an oil-free hydrating fluid
by Lancome; Neutrogena Moisture;
Cell Extracts Moisturizing Base by
Clarins; and Elizabeth Arden's Immu-
nage UV Defense Body Lotion.

STYLE

• Many foundations and tinted
moisturizers come with sun pro-
tection built in. Don't forget that you
can get as good a sunburn on the
slopes as you can on the beach. Try
Clinique's Workout Makeup with SPF
that protects against ultraviolet rays.
Christian Dior Teint D'Ete is a trans-
lucent but long-lasting foundation,
and Elizabeth Arden offers a light
alternative to foundation with Active
Day Protecting Moisture Cream. Most
popular brands, incidentally, have
similar lines. For a little extra color,
Guerlain Star Blush Fluid Treatment
is a waterproof liquid with sunscreen
in three shades — rose, apricot and
bronze.
• Never leave home with moist skin
or lips or they will chap instantly. A
great inexpensive lip protector you
can find in pharmacies is Carmex
just $1.59 a jar and more effective
than other products costing much
more. For a hint of color on your lips,
Chanel Brilliant Soleil sheer stick
moisturizes, screens the sun and
leaves a translucent film of color.
• Don't sit in front of a heater or
fireplace just before going outside.
The sudden change in temperature
can wreak havoc with your skin and
cause damage such as broken cap-
illaries.
• Use a special cream around your
eyes and keep sunglasses handy so
