written messages up to 16 characters
long. It can store up to eight mes-
sages. American pager companies
already provide similar services for
beepers, but these devices aren't
contained in a wristwatch.
Seiko hopes to sell one million
wristwatch pagers in the next three
years but it will soon have compe-
tition. Motorola Inc. and Timex Corp.
are expected to introduce their ver-
sions momentarily.

Eye Emphasis

Primarily intended to protect eyes
and prevent squinting, sunglasses
have taken on another identity —
fashion accessory. Donna Karan's line
for Bausch & Lomb, DKNY Eyes, is in
tune with the designer's clothing line,
reflecting classic and offbeat styles:
shields, glacier goggles and old
fashioned small, round spectacles.
Bausch & Lomb's Ray-Ban series
features classic aviators in many
shapes while its Levi's I's series is
aimed at the blue jeans set with funky
shapes and vividly colored frames in-
spired by the industrial safety glasses
of the 1940s and '50s.
For military cachet, Forschner, the
company that markets Swiss Army
Knives, has Swiss Army brand sun-
glasses. These lightweight mirrored
glasses are made from nickel-silver
alloy frames and have polycarbonate
lenses which are finished with leather
bridge and temple covers, detachable
leather lanyards and leather weather
shields.

S

hoes have nearly always had
some kind of significance to
society outside of their utili-
tarian purpose. In many cultures, a
person's shoes have been a key to
class or status in society.
As far back as 1325 B.C., the
Egyptians were adorning their
sandals with elegant jewelry. In
ancient Rome, only the aristocrats
were permitted to wear sandals;
slaves and servants went barefoot.
