Antique watches are at a peak in
popularity. Tourneau, a ritzy Manhat-
tan watch and jewelry dealer, reports
that its 1989 sales of classic and
vintage watches increased 60 percent
over the previous year Sales of new
watches that look old are up, too.
Among the most sought after at Tour-
neau are Hamilton's Ventura models,
dating from 1959, and Lucien Pic-
card's "skeleton watch" with see-
through top, from the 1950s.
On the other hand (so to speak), the
latest watch is the Seiko Receptor,
which has a pager capable of carrying
short messages on a liquid-crystal dis-
play. The watch, which the Japanese
company says took four years to
develop, is debuting this fall on the
West Coast at an introductory price
of $225.
