At the fall 1990 fashion shows in
New York, fashion editors, buyers and
socialites witnessed the end of an era
of extravagance as many designers
concentrated on wearability and
back-to-basics.
Pared-down often translates into
monotone. The fall '90 look is as sim-
ple as Louis Dell'Olio's coffee bean
wool turtleneck with matching slim
skirt, hat, gloves, pumps and those
opaque stockings that appeared on
most every runway. Dell'Olio repeats
this monochromatic scheme in
several reserved tones such as navy,
tobacco and gray for his Anne Klein
collection.
Offering a simple formula for fall,
Donna Karan's collection similarly in-
cludes an understated palette of
monochromatic interchangeable
pieces in earth tones.
Exemplifying the pared-down sil-
houette is the chemise, a '60s flash-
back that looks modern with its un-
cluttered lines.
Michael Kors showed suede che-
mises. Adrienne Vittadini's version is
a Mondrian revival, a long tunic
sweater with yellow and purple block
squares defined by black lines. Char-
lotte Neuville offers a cotton lace
minidress as a tribute to the chemise.
Isaac Mizrahi's interpretation has a
cowl back that dips low, as far as the
waistline. Calvin Klein showed slender
shift dresses, and Ralph Lauren's
short, black subdued shift combined
with matching gloves was elegant and
understated.
