your job, is definitely "in." (That
trend is rumored to have started in
New York City during the subway
strike several years ago. Practical
women who had to walk to work all
the way from Brooklyn wore their
tennis shoes, and never took them
off.)
On the other side, however,
high-heeled, dress-for-success shoes
are back with a vengeance. In the
elegant nineties, we're into designer
shoes that show status and class.
To keep your feet from aching,
first figure out what moderate heel
height is right for your everyday
shoes. Most foot experts recommend
a heel somewhere between 3/4 and
one inch. The proper height for you
is the lowest heel possible, though.
Heelless shoes can cause knee
pain, particularly when you have
shortened calf muscles. To find a
good heel height for you, try
touching your toes; if you can't reach
them, you've got short calf muscles,
and should probably take a heel on
the higher side. If you can touch
your toes with ease, a flatter shoe is
more appropriate for you.
Always keep a shoe's function in
mind. It's fine to have several pairs
of taller heels for fancy occasions,
but also build a solid repertoire of
basic office pumps, as well as
comfortable shoes like loafers,
oxfords, sandals and sneakers to
lounge around in.

Wearable Art

The Print Gallery is hosting an
exhibit of hand-painted, wearable art
by artist Michael Smith through Oct.
15, 1990. Mr. Smith, formerly of
Michigan, is currently living and
working in Long Beach, California.
Michael Smith uses designer
clothing from Ralph Lauren, Donna
Karan (DKNY), and others. Each piece
is original and distinctive. He has
printed on jackets, blazers, vests,
shirts, dresses, hats and purses. His
influences range from theatrical to
Southwestern motifs.
Some examples include a turquoise
polo shirt with Carmen Miranda,
denim coat with Egyptian floral motif,
DKNY denim blazer with Nouveau
patterns, creme striped vest with
Deco motifs and a black leather jacket
with Indian motifs.
