glimpse of stocking was
simply shocking. These days
all eyes are focused on the
well dressed leg. In fact, as hemlines
continue to rise, hosiery is a vital
element in pulling together an outfit.
The fact that high impact designers
like Donna Karan, Liz Claiborne,
Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani, to
name a few, have entered the fray
with their own hosiery and sock
licenses doesn't hurt legwear's new
found fashion importance either.
Legs can be encased in stretch leg-
gings (in Lycra/cotton and Lycra/
nylon) or veiled in hosiery but the
emphasis is on interesting textures,
novelty treatments and rich colors.

stripes and Navajo Indian motifs to
all-over lace but diamonds are turning

Big or small-sized, they are sprinkled
on everything from sheer black nylon
pantyhose to sporty gray knee-highs.
Designers are also adding a literal
twist to hosiery with real lacing up the
front or down the back. For maximum
impact, black lacing runs up the front
of black thigh-highs; for a more clas-
sic look, calf-high black lacing accents
gray pantyhose.
The opaque leg continues to sell
well. Even in the dog days of this past
summer, this all-one-color untextured
style was a strong seller, albeit in
lighter weights and softer pastel
colors than the fall opaques. Colors
for fall are the ever-popular neutrals
like black and navy as well as the rich
jewel tones. Indeed, the color news
this season is that an even wider array
of shades is due in the stores. Many
of the designers who have legwear
licenses are coordinating their leg-
wear colors in a dozen or more
shades to match their ready-to-wear
collections.
