bear dates from the late
1700s.
Our guide also pointed out
the pew where President
George Washington sat when
he visited Touro synagogue in
1790. Since then, that's been
designated "the President's
seat," and reserved for the
many visiting dignitaries
who have sat in the sanc-
tuary, including Abba Eban,
Elie Wiesel, Dwight Eisen-
hower, and in June, 1989,
President Mario Soares of
Portugal, who not only visited
Touro Synagogue but made a
public apology for Portugal's
past treatment of Jews.
To show us one surprising
detail of the sanctuary, the
guide stepped up on the
bimah, and, as we stood wat-
ching, she lifted a floor panel
to reveal a trap door and a
tunnel below. "It's assumed
that this was built as a con-
crete reminder of their past,"
she explained. "In Europe,
the Jews often had to pray
with trap doors and tunnels
for protection. And when they
were free in Rhode Island,
they wanted to remember
how grateful they felt.
Before we left the sanc-
tuary, we also looked at the
framed copy of President
Washington's letter to Moses
Seixas, warden of the syna-
gogue, who, when Washing-
ton visited Newport, pre-
sented him with a letter on
behalf of the Jews of Newport,
asking for assurance that
their rights in the new nation
would include freedom of
religion.
The President's famous rep-
ly, dated August 17, 1790,
stated in part that the new
government "gives to bigotry
no sanction, to persecution no
assistance." And he wished
the Jews of Newport well,
writing, "May the Children of
the Stock of Abraham, who
dwell in this land, continue to
merit and enjoy the good will
of the other inhabitants."
Every August, on the
weekend closest to August 17,
when the letter was dated, a
special ceremony is held in
Touro synagogue, and Wash-
ington's letter is always read.
Planning that ceremony,
which last year included a
celebration in honor of the
225th anniversary of Iburo, is
just one of the many respon-
sibilities of Rabbi Chaim
Shapiro.
He came to Newport three
years ago from Long Beach,
N.Y., to serve as rabbi of the
historic congregation whose
founders arrived in Newport
"I still feel a certain mysti-
que about this congregation,"
said the rabbi, sitting in his
book-filled office next door to
