London Police Probe Vandalism London (JTA) — The Lon- don Metropolitan Police have expressed alarm at the recent sharp increase of anti- Semitic vandalism in and around the city. One of the most serious in- cidents was the assault on the Willesden cemetery, where about 25 gravestones were smeared with crude black swastikas and others overturned. The intruders used wire cutters to enter the cemetery, which covers 23 acres and contains the graves of many prominent members of British Jewry. A few days later, swastikas were daubed on the nearby Dollis Hill Syn- agogue and on a Holocaust memorial. There was a similar assault on the Blackley cemetery in Manchester earlier this month. Those incidents were the latest of a wave of desecra- tions at Jewish sites since Commander Richard Monk, head of the * ► nlice community involvemE ti I FREE ESTIMATES! , • k;IN`. 37 Years in Business 2040 Easy Street 2100 Easy Street Walled Lake, MI 48088 (313) 624-7400 • •sK 1 +.• HOURS: Mon.-Thurs. 9-7 Fri. 9-6, Sat. 9-5 358 2333 - of Southfield • PASSPORT • SPECIAL $7.95 $14.95 A rash of anti- Semitic incidents have been reported. crime branch, told a news briefing he was especially worried by the attacks on Jewish sites because they have soared from virtually nil to 27 in the last few mon- ths. Previously there had been so few incidents that figures were not kept, he said. Inspector John Brown, the police liaison with the Board of Deputies of British Jews, which monitors incidents af- fecting London's Jewish community, described the attack on the Willesden cemetery as a "very disturb- ing incident." The police refused to pro- vide details, claiming the United Synagogue, the um- brella organization of Lon- don's Orthodox synagogues that manages the cemetery, had requested a news blackout. But Jonathan Lew, chief executive of the United Syn- agogue, denied a cover-up. He called the attack "a disgrace" perpetrated by "a particular type of vandal." Mr. Lew stressed that the graffiti were removed within hours, though signs of the vandalism remained visible despite the use of chisels and solvents. \ ASA Builders Supply Co. & Cabinet Corp. 1 set • 2 sets "Must Be Done At The Same Time" 2 Photos per passport (with coupon) Save Big Bucks $3.00 off 36 exposures $2.00 off 24 exposures $1.00 off 12 exposure or disc (on developing and printing 110,126,135, C-41 color prints) 20%-50% off on Frames 10% off on posters (Great for Anniversaries & Bor Mitzvahs) We Transfer your old movies, prints and slides to video cassettes, Restore or Repair your photographs No Negative — No Problem, .
