lated my words into
Waorani; as he did, the
smiles that had lit up the
faces of these Indians disap-
peared. Then the headman,
looking directly into my
eyes, spoke to me and Jim
again translated.
The Waorani said he was
saddened to learn I lived
alone. He wondered who
hunted for me when I was
sick or injured, who fought
beside me if I was attacked,
and didn't I need children to
take care of me when I got
old?
His genuine concern
touched me deeply. This
"savage" knew something
about the meaning of real
community that I, for all my
supposed worldliness, had
still to learn. His understan-
ding unleashed my
vulnerability and I began to
cry as he stood there looking
at me, his gaze never waver-
ing.
I've come to realize that
this episode in the jungle
was a transformative mo-
ment for me. It marked the
start of an ongoing healing
process that has brought me
back to family and commun-
ity — my tribe. A great deal
of disappointment and pain
have been involved. Surely
there will be more.
But I've learned that my
family and community are
indeed mine. There is no
escaping this. Despite the
inherent problems, I've also
come to see that they offer
the best chance I have for
achieving real community in
a world where that is a des-
perately needed, but en-
dangered, concept. ❑
