we bog down. And that's a
real problem for us. In
some areas such of the
Federation we are bogged
down in territorialism and
red tape."
Mr. Aronson said one of
his biggest concerns is the
implementation of a stra-
tegic plan for Detroit's
Federation, based in part
on the demographic study.
He said that for a variety of
reasons, including the Jew-
ish community's move-
ment away from the city,
the futures of Southfield
and Oak Park's Jewish
communities, Operation
Exodus and other issues, a
strategic plan is no longer
an option but a necessity.
"It's important that we
pull the information from
the demographic survey
into a strategic plan. We
are a rooted community, a
personal community with
lots of young people mov-
ing back into areas like
Southfield and Oak Park.
"As a Federation, we
have to be more sensitive
to peoples' needs. There are
many thorny issues out
there: Who is a Jew?, the
Jewish position on abortion
rights, strategies concern-
ing Israel. These are
among some of the issues

we just cannot sidestep."
Mr. Aronson who, with
his wife Laura has two
children, said he loves corn-
ing to work in the morning
and seeing his staff.
"I know that there are
some jobs where people
drag into work," he said.
"But that's not the case
here. I love coming into
work, and I love getting to
work early."
Laura, his wife of 10
years said that her husband
is, indeed, for real. She said
that his interests in print-
making, bird watching and
military history as well as
his dedication to his family
also take precedence in his
life.
"He is a real person," Ms.
Aronson, a fashion
designer, said. "What he
does, he does because he's
committed, and his com-
mitment to Israel and Jew-
ish life is a very real part of
his life. But he does have a
whole other part of him."
"The important thing is I
can leave this behind me
when I go home," Mr.
Aronson said. "I'm a pri-
vate person. I'm not a real
social person. When it's my
time, I want to be by myself
or with my family. I'm a bet-
ter leader for it." ❑

Pentagon Denies Telling
Jewish GIs To Hide I.D.

Washington (JTA) — Some
American soldiers in Saudi
Arabia may have been ad-
vised by superiors to hide
dog tags identifying them-
selves as Jews, but the ad-
vice was not on orders from
the Pentagon or the Saudi
kingdom, according to
Defense Secretary Dick
Cheney.
"Some uninformed in-
dividual down the chain of
command in the organiza-
tion may have told a soldier,
based on speculation,"
Cheney said, "but the fact is
the Saudis have not imposed
any such restriction on us.
And we obviously would not
agree to that."
Mr. Cheney, appearing on
ABC-TV's "Good Morning
America" program Aug. 23,
added that the Saudis have
"accepted our forces as is,
regardless of religion,
regardless of whether they

are male or female."

The issue arose after Sen.
Daniel Patrick Moynihan
(D-N.Y.) wrote Mr. Cheney
about a Jewish family in his
state who told him their son
was "advised of the 'option'
of receiving a 'non- Jewish'
identity (including 'non-
denominational' dog tags)
prior to his departure to
Saudi Arabia." .
David Luchins, Sen.
Moynihan's special assis-
t ant, welcomed Mr.
Cheney's assurance and
added, "We hope to see that
formalized in a directive."
Two of the Jewish groups
closest to the Pentagon ex-
pressed little concern about
the incident. But the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith called on Mr. Cheney
to issue a directive to U.S.
personnel, "outlining
available options if some at-
tention to religious affilia-
