tators took years to build up
their arsenals and to li-
quidate all opposition. Then,
like Hitler, Saddam Hussein
tried out his war machine on
Iran in an unprovoked eight-
year war, resulting in enor-
mous casualties and with the
use of chemical gas.
were

Both
adherents of National
Socialism — "Nazism" and
"Bathism" — thus all appeal-
ing to all segments of society.
Both dictators advocated
national unity under their
sovereignty. "One German
Folk," and "One Arab Na-
tion." Kuwait is claimed as
part of the Arab nation, as is
the Austrian "Anschluss."
The next intended victim is
obviously Israel — which like
Czechoslovakia is not part of
the national unit.
One could enumerate many
psychological factors that
prevail in a dictatorship:
historic grievances of being
unfairly treated in the
postwar period; playing Robin
Hood — pitting the "haves"
against the "have nots"; em-
phasis on propoganda, kiss-
ing babies, staging
demonstrations, oppor-
tunism, double-talk ("guests"
who are forced to stay) and
developing a macho image:
military uniforms, ubiquitous
self-portraits and the desire to
become a modern Nebuchad-
nezzer of Babylon (who con-
quered the Near East and
destroyed Israel about five
centuries B.C.E.).
One sad commentary is
that both dictators were ap-
peased and aided by the very
people who were later
victimized.

Israel Was
Misrepresented

On "Sixty Minutes" this
past Sunday, Mike Wallace
made a most interesting com-
ment. After drawing the bat-
tle lines in the Middle East,
Mr. Wallace noted that Israel,
recipient of $3 billion of U.S.
aid a year, is doing nothing to
help the United States.
Mr. Wallace is a very sophis-
ticated, knowledgeable man.
He has an excellent grasp of
history and politics. Mr.
Wallace has deliberately
chosen to misrepresent Israel
to his millions of viewers.
Did he forget that it was
Israel that destroyed Iraq's
nuclear facility in 1981, while
the rest of the world sat by
silently applauding? Did he
forget to note that Israel has
kept Iraq out of Jordan,
thereby denying Iraq a port
on the Gulf of Aqaba as well

as a second front to Saudi
Arabia? Did he ignore that
Haifa is the main supply port
for the United States sixth
fleet in the Mediterranean?
What motivates Mr.
Wallace to ignore all the facts
is highly speculative. Surely
it is not necessary to increase
the size of his audience. Why
does he stir up anti-Israel sen-
timent? His failure to be
aware of Jewish affairs is
most unusual for a man who
acknowledged being a Jew
throughout his college years.
Is this self-hate?

Treaty
Is Signed

Bonn (JTA) — Despite vig-
orous protests from the Jew-
ish community, leaders of
the two German states
signed a unification treaty
last Friday that makes no
reference to the Nazi era.
The treaty, signed in East
Berlin by West German
Interior Minister Wolfgang
Schauble and East German
State Secretary Gunther
Krause, forms the legal
framework for the unifica-
tion that will take place Oct.
3.
The document contains
nearly 1,000 pages dealing
with every conceivable
ramification of unification.
It includes mentions of
politics, economics, sports,
what to do with the files of
East Germany's late secret
police, the Stasi, and how to
deal with the issue of abor-
tion.
But the document contains
no mention of the Nazi era.
The Jewish community
had pressed West German
Chancellor Helmut Kohl to
include mention of Ger-
many's Nazi past, and he
had assured Jewish leaders
in July that the treaty would
include words that would
emphasize Germany's moral
debt to Nazi victims.
But when the government
draft of the treaty was
released two weeks ago, it
said only that a unified
German state would be con-
scious of German history.
