Whether the Zohar is right or not, beginning today, Jewish singles in Detroit who are readers of The Jew- ish News' People Connector will be better able to judge which of the personals' advertisers they might like to meet, thanks to the inau- guration of Voice Connector, the paper's new electronic voice-mail service. Offered as an ancillary service to the popular People Connector, the Voice Con- nector is expected to go a long way toward helping Jewish singles more suc- cessfully — and more quick- ly — meet those eligible sin- gles in whom they are most likely to be interested. Voice Connector, now ap- pearing in the People Con- nector personals section, works like this: personals advertisers are assigned a code and password to access the system. Upon dialing a toll-free 800 number, they may record a message of up to two minutes' length. People Connector readers call a special 900 number, enter the code which appears in the advertisement that interests them and leave their own recorded message that includes their name and telephone number. (The charge for listening is 95 cents per minute, billed by the telephone company on the monthly statement.) The Voice Connector's major ad- vantage is that advertiser and respondent can meet quickly because the adver- tiser can check his or her elec- tronic mailbox the same day in which the printed ad appears. The other way of respon- ding to the ad — writing a letter, mailing it and waiting for a response — is still available, of course, but the respondent will have to wait a few days for the postal service to make deliveries. Every voice-ad is screened by Microvoice Applications, Inc., of Minneapolis, Minn. "We screen every ad for obscenity as well as ad- dresses, last names and phone numbers" which a . Voice Connector user might have inadvertently entered, to protect the confidentiality of the user, said Bonnie Lazar, MicroVoice sales representative who handles the Jewish newspapers subscribing to the service. If a message is deemed in- appropriate or gives too much information, a record- ed message is left for the user, telling him or her to correct and re-record the advertisement, said Mrs. Lazar. The two sister papers of The Jewish News, the Baltimore Jewish Times and the Atlanta Jewish Times, will go on-line with the system today also, although there is no inter-city service at present. How much can a person learn about another just by hearing that person's voice? "A lot more of a person's personality shows through in a recorded message," said Mrs. Lazar "You can quick- ly tell whether a person is nebbishy or really with it by how they talk. "Someone who's clever can write a great written ad, but it's kind of hard to hide what their voices and their speech 1
