FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 1990

t's called "Play It Again,
Syme," the title somewhat
of a takeoff from Hum-
phrey Bogart's words in the
movie Casablanca.
Daniel Syme's recording
disc of 19 tunes begins with
"As Time Goes By" from the
film classic starring Bogie,
Lauren Bacall, Sidney
Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and
Claude Rains . . . The
72-minute disc includes a
variety on the keyboard by
Sonya and Rabbi M. Robert
Syme's very talented son
. . . Songs like "Memory,"
"Send In The Clowns," "Don't
Cry For Me Argentina,"
"Somewhere My Love," "My
Way," "Stardust," "Feelings,"
George Gershwin's great
"Rhapsody In Blue" with the
London, England, Royal Phil-
harmonic Orchestra, Paul
Freeman, conductor . . .
David had gone there for a
recording session of this tune,
and it gives quite a fine touch
to some wonderful piano styl-
ings that also include light
classical ("Claire De Lune")
and even "Root Beer Rag."
It also comes in a set of two
cassettes with 26 tunes (all
the above and six others) that
run 96 minutes.
There is a wonderful feel in
the touch of David Syme .. .
It's as if his eyes are closed in
sheer ecstasy as his fingers
nimbly glide across the black
and white keys with sensuous
enjoyment.
The disc and cassette set of
two will be a favorite in many
piano collections.
David can be seen in person
Tuesdays through Fridays, 7
p.m. to 11 p.m., at La
Rotisserie of Hyatt Regency
Dearborn . . . Also, beginning
this Monday, on the Larry
King Show, two commercials
by David, promoting the disc
and tapes can be heard .. .
The promos will have an
eight-week run over TNT and
Lifetime cable networks.
David's first attempt at
recording his own disc and
cassettes is quite rewarding
. . . with songs selected from
classical to Broadway to stan-
dards to show tunes to pops
. . . Sonya and Rabbi Syme
couldn't be any prouder of
David . . . And don't you just
love that title . . . "Play It
Again, Syme?"
A GENT IN full football
regalia greets you at the en-
trance to Tailgate high
energy sports theme bar in
the Holiday Inn of Southfield
on Telegraph near 10 Mile .. .
But doesn't answer when peo-
ple say hello to him . . . Not
that he isn't polite, but it
would be kind of scary if the
guy did . . . what with him be-
ing a dummy . . . Same for a
baseball player inside stan-
ding near a wall . . . It's a fun
spot, with hors d'oeuvres serv-
ed on the back end of a sawed-
off pickup.
Holiday Inn of Southfield's
more formal restaurant,
`Play It Again,
Syme' is available
on disc or
cassette.
South St. Grille, is the former
Sassy's, and you know how
pretty that room has always
been . . . Seating is now for
150.
Over 300 coaches, some
delegates and parents stayed
at the Holiday Inn of South-
field during the recent JCC-
Maccabi Games . . . Their
coordinator for Holiday Inn of
Southfield and Maccabi was
Abbe Randolph, director of
sales . . . She's Jewish and
knew their dietary needs.
Reggie Finley has been
general manager of South-
field's Holiday Inn two years
. . . coming here from a H.I. in
Chicago and doing a big job
. . . The hotel, with 417
rooms, is now running second
in occupancy for northwest
honors . . . Radisson Plaza is
number one.
MICHIGAN REGULA-
TION No. 541, "Handling of
Smoked Fish" was originally
enacted in 1895, then 1917
and 1948 . . . The present law
has been on the books in Lan-
sing since 1954, over 36 years!
.. The old law, which nobody
has seemed to bother looking
into, calls for a salt (sodium
chloride) content of not less
than 5 percent . . . Would do
well for a state legislator to
check this out . . . Five per-
cent salt is far from being
healthy . . . Acme Smoked
Fish out of Brooklyn, N.Y., is
less than 2 percent.
35 YEARS AGO, Mike
Deutsch was hired as a meat
cutter by Lucky Stores, which
later became Food Fair .. .
Mike recently retired as
manager of the meat depart-
ment in the Dearborn
Heights store of Farmer Jack,
which it later became . . .
Retirement party for family
and friends was at home of
Mike and wife Joanne.
CONGRATS . . . to Sol and
Bess Rosenman . . . on their
60th anniversary.
BACK ON May 14, 1933,
during the Depression, two
couples decided to run off
and get married at the home
of Rabbi Strauss . . .
Jack Kroker had an ice cream
store on Dexter near Richton,
selling two dips for a nickel,
and Seldon Barris drove a
linen truck . . . Jack said "I
Do" to Betty Schram and best
friend Seldon did his vows
with Birdie Goldblatt.
Was a big night for them .. .
being wed, then to Boesky's
on Dexter, and the movie
Rasputin at the gorgeous
Fisher Theatre with its Egyp-
tian architecture and live, col-
orful parrots downstairs .. .
Since then, they had always
celebrated their anniver-
saries together until 'Seldon
and Birdie moved to Merritt
Island, Fla., 12 years ago.
The four were together
again recently . . . this time to
celebrate the 85th birthday of
Seldon at Dimitri's of
Southfield with brunch given
by Birdie.
CONGRATS ... To bar-
rister Michael Cherrin . . . on
his 50th birthday.'
TV-2 ANCHOR Theresa
Lukenas will be emcee for
Gregory Hines when he does
his great stuff Sept. 9 at the
Fisher Theatre to raise
money to help Israel's Kaplan
Medical Center continue its
fine work in AIDS research.
Some tickets are still
