Joblessness
Hits Record

Jerusalem (JPFS) —
Unemployment in Israel
topped the 10 per cent mark
in the second quarter of the
year, with a record 165,000
people jobless and no relief
in sight.
According to seasonally
adjusted.figures released by
the Central Bureau of
Statistics Sunday, 10.1 per
cent of the work force was
unemployed during the
months April through June,
as compared to 9.4 per cent
in the previous quarter, and
9.2 per cent during April-
June 1989.
These figures are based on
continuous surveys taken by
the bureau, and include job-
seekers who have not work-
ed at all during the week in
which the survey is taken,
and have actively sought
employment.
The rate of unemployment
among men during the se-
cond quarter of this year was
8.7 per cent, as compared to
8.6 per cent during the
previous quarter, and 8.2 per
cent during the second
quarter of 1989.
For women, unemploy-
ment rates are even higher,
and are climbing faster.
than those for men. During
April-June 1990, 11.9 per
cent of the female work force
was unemployed, 10.7 per
cent during the previous
quarter, and 10.8 per cent in
April-June of last year.
According to Finance Min-
istry projections,
unemployment rates cannot
be expected to fall during the
next five years, and will re-
main at 9-10 per cent. Dur-
ing that period, some
600,000 people will enter the
work force, and by 1994,
200,000 people will be out of
work.
