Test Rocket

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A two-
stage solid-fuel rocket soared
13 miles into the atmosphere
over Israel last week for no
loftier purpose than getting
good grades for 14
graduating students at
Haifa's Technion-Israel In-
stitute of Technology who
designed and built it.
The rocket, dubbed
"Technion 90," was, in fact,
their final exam for bachelor
of science degrees, awarded
upon completion of the four-
year course at Technion's
School of Aviation and Space
Engineering.
The 11-foot rocket,
weighing 242 pounds, was
designed as a meteorological
research project and carried
instruments in its nose cap-
sule to measure atmospheric
pressures and temperatures.
The capsule also contained
a parachute, which brought
the rocket gently back to
earth after a six-minute
flight at three times the
speed of sound.
It was recovered at sea.
According to the Technion
students and staff, the in-
struments worked perfectly
during the brief flight and
the telemetry was picked up
clearly by ground stations.

Israel's Mideast
Posture Splits
French Right.

Paris(JTA) — The extreme
right wing in France is of
two minds with respect to
Israel's role in the Persian
Gulf crisis.
The far-right weekly
Minute charged Israel pro-
voked the situation to fur-
ther its own interests.
It accused the "pro-Israel
lobby" Wednesday of in-
fluencing the media and of
fanning the flames of crisis
in order "to settle once and
for all the Middle East prob-
lem."
But Jean-Marie Le Pen,
head of the blatantly racist
National Front, paid tribute
to what he called Israel's
"intelligent and moderate
position" of keeping out of
the conflict.
Mr. Le Pen, who has called
the Holocaust a "footnote"
to history, pursued his par-
ty's crusade against foreign
workers, especially Arabs in
France, in a French state
radio interview Aug. 23.
He said "the Arabs are a
problem right here in
Europe but not in their own
countries."
