STEVE WHITELEY Special to The Jewish News T he gray, cool days at West Bloomfield High School provided a perfect backdrop for the North American Maccabi Youth Games track and field meet, a four-day showcase for some of the best 13-16 year-old talent from around the world. "It was a well-run meet," Joel Kashdan, coach of the 22-member Detroit team, said. "The competition was pretty much the same level as the 1988 Games in Chicago and the 1986 Games in Toronto," he added. "It was better or worse, depen- ding on the individual event." Kashdan, a retired marathon runner who corn- peted in both the Boston and New York marathons, saw his team capture medals in several events, including two in the shot put. Allison Zameck won a bronze in the girls 13-14 category, with a throw of 23 feet. Jody Lesnick also finished third 28 FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 1990 in the girls 15-16, with a 26-1 toss. Chad Silver finished seventh in the 13-14 boys shot put for Detroit (27-5 1/2), and Danny Newman fin- ished seventh in the boys 15- 16 (22-7). Jeanette Rubinstein won a gold medal for Detroit in the girls 15-16 100-meter hurdles. She also won a silver medal for the home team in the 300-meter hurdles, with a time of 50.9 seconds, and capped off her performance by winning an- other gold as a member of the girls 15-16 4x100 relay team (April Kashdan, Sara Kolodin, Jeanette Rubins- tein and Cara Ianni). Other medal winners for Detroit through the first three days of competition were Merrek Sakwa, a bronze in the boys 15-16 800- meters (2:04.4); and Ryan Sills, a bronze in the boys 13- 14 100-meter dash. Many other members of the Detroit team ran well, but ended out of the medal picture. Included were Davi Ellis, sixth in the girls 13-14 800; Chad Silver, fifth in the Detroit's two-mile bronze medalist Merrek Sakwa gets a kiss from sister, Layne, while Sari Berman receives the baton from 4x100 Detroit teammate Jodi Sidder.
