golfers have been
given extra incentive
to win a tournament Sept. 4.
Al Iwrey and three part-
ners won a local qualifying
tournament for the
Oldsmobile Scramble Aug. 4
at Wabeek Country Club.
After winning, Mr. Iwrey
learned that the national
finals for his division are
scheduled to take place in
Florida on Yom Kippur.
Mr. Iwrey has spent the
last three weeks telephoning
Scramble officials,
Oldsmobile Divison and
General Motors officers, the
Michigan Professional
Golfers Association and the
Jewish Community Council
and the Anti-Defamation
League.
"I wanted an alternative

date if we made the finals,"
Mr. Iwrey said. "Failing
that, I wanted a commit-
ment from the tournament
that the conflict with the
High Holidays wouldn't
happen again."
A Scramble official told
Mr. Iwrey the date was
chosen because of television
commitments. He could not
guarantee the conflict with
the holidays would not occur
again.

At the urging of a PGA of-
ficial, Iwrey and his partners
— Gilbert Spilman, Jerry
Franklin and Ron Silberman
— will play Sept. 4 in the
sectional championships,
also at Wabeek.
"We want to win in order
to create more pressure
about the finals on Yom
Kippur," Mr. Iwrey said. "If
we win, we will not play on
Yom Kippur."

B'nai B'rith, BB Women
Finally Reach Accord

New York (JTA) — B'nai
Brith International and
B'nai Brith Women appear
to have ended years of
dispute by reaching a land-
mark five-year agreement
which mutually recognizes
each organization as an in-
dependent, self-governing
organization.
The agreement specifies
the independent nature of
the group, including
budgetary and ad-
ministrative functions that
had previously been con-
trolled by B'nai B'rith
International, according to
BBW president Harriet
Horwitz.
"B'nai B'rith Interna-
tional's constitution con-
tained a section, now chang-
ed, that technically gave
them the power to control
anything that BBW would
want to do," said Ms.
Horwitz.
"There was more and more
of a sense to establish a
merged organization and do
away with BBW," she con-
tinued, "Now, it is no longer
a danger."
BBI president Seymour
Reich said the issue "needed
to be resolved" and had been
"misunderstood." "It was
thought by some that BBI
was denying BBW full
equality, when in fact it
wasn't," said Reich. "Now,

the BBI name is protected
and BBW has an acknowl-
edged and formalized
agreement."
Current members of BBW
who participate in the mem-
ber insurance program may
continue that participation
without being required to
become members of BBI.
Employees of BBW in the
B'nai B'rith pension plan
will continue to contribute to
the plan until BBW elects to
terminate participation in
the plan.
The agreement also pro-
vides for the continued in-
volvement of BBW represen-
tatives with the Anti-
Defamation League and
B'nai B'rith Youth Organ-
izations, while BBW main-
tain its financial obligations
to B'nai B'rith Youth Organ-
ization and Hillel.
Under terms of the agree-
ment, BBW is not allowed to
accept members outside of
the United States and
Canada excluding current
members or those who move.
The dispute formally
began in 1988 when the two
organizations were unable to
agree on terms of the rela-
tionship between them.
Reich, however, traces the
beginnings of the dispute to
1972, when BBI began to
feel pressure from women
who felt they were not equal.
