This 'Karate Kid'
Is Jewish, Too
Albuquerque, N.M.
A 9-
year old Jewish boy has
become the youngest person
in the world to win the
Kobudo Award from the
International Martial Arts
Federation (IMAF) of Japan.
And, thanks to a rules
change, he may hold that
distinction forever.
Simon Goldfine of Albu-
querque, the 1987 United
States Karate Association
champion in both fighting
and forms, had to pass both
written and physical tests to
win the Kobudo, an award
for proficiency in the art of
ancient weaponry.
Kobudo entrance into
IMAF has been open tradi-
tionally only to 4th-degree
black belts in Japan and, for
the last year, to black and
color belts in the U.S. But a
new rule will limit it to those
age 16 and above.
