"In 1974, the picture
and the sofa cost about
$1,500 each.
What do you t hink
they're worth today?"
— Albert Scagliorte, Parky4st Gallery
exotic trees to Paris.
Albert Scaglione, founder
of Park West Gallery, often
visits Mr. Altman in Paris,
where he says he has watch-
ed the artist work tirelessly
on a picture until every
detail is perfect.
Mr. Altman spends about
four months each year in
Paris, the rest in Penn-
sylvania. His works are in
collections at the Museum of
Modern Art, the Smithso-
nian Institute, the Boston
Museum of Fine Arts and
the Victoria and Albert Mu-
seum of London. He has pro-
duced more than 700 prints
and held exhibitions in
Japan, France, England and
Peru.
"It's very encouraging
when you know what you've
done is appreciated," Mr.
Altman says. "It makes you
want to do better and do
more."
Mr. Altman begins his
work by making a sketch or
photograph — sometimes of
.
a real site, sometimes a vi-
sion from his imagination —
which he calls "my point of
departure." Then he begins
to draw, "the pencil tripping
over the page until the work
comes alive."
His pictures are printed in
Paris at L'Imprimerie Des-
jobert on the same 100-year-
old presses used on the
works of Picasso, Chagall,
Braque, Miro and Matisse.
Among the cities and
countries that have inspired
Mr. Altman are Japan.
Washington, D.C., and his
hometown New York, where
he used to eat malteds as
colorful as the works he now
creates.
"I remember when I was a
boy I used to eat all kinds of
malteds for a nickel; I even
had pineapple and root beer
malteds," he says. "I wanted
to try everything in life.
"Of course I've yet to go to
Miami, and I don't think I'll
ever want to." El

"The Chagall lithograph is now worth
$54,000. The sofa? Perhaps a few hundred
dollars. Of course, not every work of art will
appreciate so dramatically. That's why so many
people come to us. Just as an interior designer
helps you put together the right environment,
.
we help you build an art collection. And it
doesn't have to be expensive. You could easily
collect an appreciable work of art for under
$1,000 . . . See for yourself. Visit the gallery. It's
not at all intimidating. In fact, it's quite
comfortable . . . Like your favorite sofa?'
