Special to The Jewish News
T
ry to explain to a
new Soviet immigrant
a United Jewish Ap-
peal mission.
We went to Yavne last week
to begin preparations for the
Ingathering and Morasha
young leadership missions
that will come from Detroit
Oct. 21-31. The Iraq situa-
tion, however, prompted us to
try and get reactions from
some of our newest citizens.
What happened required all
our verbal and non-verbal
skills, and really got us
side-tracked.
We started by telling the
eight people we met during a
break in their ulpan (Hebrew)
lessons that the UJA mis-
sions were coming in October
and that we would want some
of them to interact with their
American brothers and sis-
ters from Detroit.
That prompted a barrage of
questions about Detroit, the
federation system and the
United States in general. So,
there in the courtyard, we
began a "new course" on the
American Jewish community.
We became the teachers and,
when the regular teachers
saw what was going on, they
gave us latitude to continue
as the "class" grew.

pervades everything. They
are a marvelous aliyah.
We outlined the strutrure of
the American Jewish com-
munity and how Project
Renewal came about. We ex-
plained how the twinning
process between Detroit and
Ramla, and now Yavne, had
developed into outstanding
examples of good relation-
ships existing between Israeli
and American communities.
We told the new im-
migrants how the federations
work — a combination of pro-
fessionals and dedicated
volunteer lay leaders. They

had difficulty understanding
many of the concepts, because
their Hebrew is at a very
elementary level and this is
new to them. We are not sure
how much of our explanations
truly penetrated.
We are sure they now have
a greater appreciation for the
money, love, assistance and
interest their American
brethren are providing for
them. These people were not
refuseniks, so they never had
contact with the American
Jews involved in the Soviet
Jewry movement.
They also are anxiously
waiting for the mission to
come. The thought of
American Jews coming to ex-
press the unity of our rela-
