part in shaping union

inspired their members in
every strike or lockout.
While still a law student
London joined the
Socialist Labor party; after
the schism of 1899 he
became a member of the
new Socialist Party, to
which he belonged as long
as he lived. He was a
charter member also of the
Workmen's Circle (Arbeiter
Ring), formed in 1906, and
always prominent in its
ranks.
In 1896 he was
nominated for the state
legislature from a district
in the Jewish East Side,
and was a Socialist
standard-bearer in almost
every election year
thereafter .

people and intensely active
in fighting every manifesta-
tion of anti-Semitism; yet
although, properly speak-
ing, he was not an assimila-
tionist, he opposed the
Jewish nationalist and
Zionist movements.
For the historically minded,
these are fascinating recollec-
tions. For researchers about
the U.S. Congress, the Berger-
London experiences should
inspire deep studies involving
a variety of prejudices.
While it is doubtful
whether election of socialists
to Congress could happen
again - or ever - a chapter
stemming from the
recollected occurrences cer-
tainly merits being
remembered.

ecollections about the
importance of a Jew
having been the first
to create and perfect the
automobile has drawn wide
interest to the name of
Siegfried Marcus, the
automobile's creator.
His great nephew Frank
Theyleg revived attention to
his uncle's treatment under
Nazis and has exposed the
Nazi lies about him and the
anti-Semitic evidence of the
hiding of a Jew's accomplish-
ment. The automobile story
was related in "Purely Com-
mentary" Aug. 3.
Then came the interesting

letter from Henry Politzer
Aug. 10 about the Marcus
creation being seen in the
Vienna museum.
Frank Theyleg follows up
with a demand to make Mr.
Marcus' achievements histor-
ical facts as he states in this
message in which he refers to
the Goebbel's and other Nazi
fabrications about Jewish
achievements in Germany
during the Hitler years:
I talked with Mr. Politzer
to further help me in form-
ing this assessment which
is summarized below:
Mr. Politzer writes that
he visited the museum a
few years ago and that he
was told by two of its
employees that the car was
on display during the en-
tire Nazi period, that its ex-
hibit was never touched
and that the Marcus name
and biography were never
removed or changed dur-
ing that time Mr. Politzer
told me that he believes the
two museum employees
were about 50 years old.
About 19 years ago, the
car showed indications of
being restored from effects,
apparently caused by
years of neglect. I was told
that the car was opera-
tional, that it had been
started up rather easily
but no-one seemed to know
where the car was during
the Nazi period must be
1970s, the museum showed
the car at a good location
and attributed the primary
creation of the modern
gasoline-fueled motor vehi-
cle to Siegfried Marcus.
Mr. Politzer's letter is
remarkable and requires
confirmation, including as
follows: a) The claim by the
employees on the un-
disturbed exhibit during
the Nazi period must be
verified by documented or
unquestionable eye
witness account (are such
individuals still alive?). b) if
true, it would have been a
very dangerous contraven-
tion of high-level Nazi
orders, (see letter by Goeb-
bel's ministry dated 7-4-40),
with the most likely fatal
consequences. c) If so-
meone indeed thusly con-
travened Nazi orders,
every effort must be to
identify and appropriately
commend the responsible
person(s).
Perhaps Jewish News
readers can help.

The basic facts are
reiterated here with recogni-
tion of Mr. Theyleg's
statements about his uncle.
An important Jewish creative
achievement, this will be
recalled and remembered.
