To further complicate
matters, some Ethiopian
Jews who reached Israel via
Sudan during Operation
Moses were from converted
families. Thus, many of the
Christians of Jewish descent
already have family mem-
bers in Israel.
In addition, at least one
large Christian-Jewish clan
now in Addis Ababa, from
the village of Dembia, is said
to have returned to Judaism
four years ago under the
guidance of a kes — an Ethi-
opian Jewish spiritual
leader. "If they have
repented," an Ethiopian
Jewish elder said, "why not
accept them as Jews?"
The decision not to allow
the Christians of Jewish
descent to immigrate, or to
extend them financial sup-
port in Addis, has not been
an easy one for Israeli offi-
cials.
"We are tough during the
day, but we cry at night,"
Micha Feldman, the director
of Jewish Agency operations
in Addis, said.
Nonetheless, even some of
the most dedicated activists
_ on behalf of Ethiopian Jewry
feel the decision is justified.
"Jews throughout the cen-
turies have suffered terrible
persecution because they
refused to convert," an
American Jew who is help-
ing here said. "That is part
of what has made us Jews."

Israelis Plan
Study In China
Jerusalem (JTA) — Five
Hebrew University students
left Jerusalem last week for
a year's study in China.
Their program will include
learning the country's lang-
uage and culture.
The students are part of an
exchange program estab-
lished by the Israeli Foreign
Ministry, the Chinese dele-
gation to the United Nations
and the Israel Academy of
Sciences.
The Hebrew University is
already playing host to five
graduate students from
China.
The Israeli students got a
send-off from Dr. Meir
Zadok, the Hebrew Univer-
sity's academic director. He
said he hoped the program
would lead to broader
exchange of scientists and
researchers.
