and children will be accepted
as full-fledged Jews by all
Jews. Furthermore, a prospec-
tive convert has the right to
expect that his or her conver-

by the entire Jewish nation.
And we, the Jewish people,
have the responsibility to in-
sure that these expectations
are met. This can only occur
with a common definition of
Who is a Jew, which is ab-
solutely necessary in order to
preserve and perpetuate
Jewish unity and peace
amongst the children of
Israel. El

n an unusual political
twist, the race for the
15th state senate seat
puts three Jewish can-
didates against each other
on the Nov. 6 ballot.
"It's a non-issue," says
Sen. Jack Faxon, the Dem-
ocratic incumbent who has
easily held onto the position
for 26 years. "It is unusual
that there are three Jewish
candidates, but if all can-
didates are Jewish, it won't
have any bearing on the
race."
Vying to unseat Mr. Faxon
are Southfield City Council
Member Denise Alexander,
who had been courted by the
state Republican Party, and
Steve Silver, who heads the
local Libertarian Party.
Ms. Alexander also is one
of many Jewish Republicans
recently brought to center
stage. Rep. David Honigman
for years has been the only
Jewish Republican elected to
state office.
It is possible a third Jew-
ish Republican might join
the Lansing Jewish delega-
tion, which to date numbers
six: Sen. Lana Pollack, D-
Ann Arbor; Rep. Maxine
Berman, D-Southfield; Rep.
Burton Leland, D-Detroit;
Rep. David Gubow, D-
Huntington Woods, Mr.
Honigman, R-West Bloom-
field; and Mr. Faxon, D-
Farmington Hills.
Debbie Schlussel, who ap-
parently lost her primary
bid by one vote to Barbara
Dobb, is asking for a re-
count. Results will be known
in the coming weeks.
Jim Alexander, who heads
the Oakland County Repub-
lican Party, has been trying

to lure more Jews to the par-
ty. Historically, Jews have
aligned with the Democratic
Party.
"There is more identifica-
tion these days among Jews
with the Republican Party
on issues at the state level,"
Mr. Alexander says. "Jews
are making progress."
Ms. Alexander, a divorce
attorney with the Birm-
ingham firm Carson,
Fischer, Potts and Hyman,
talks about many issues she
says must be addressed in
Lansing. Among them are
ensuring education, making
sure taxes are not raised and
allowing local and state law
enforcement agencies to
adequately perform their
duties.
After 26 years, she says,
the district needs a change
in leadership.
In 1989, Ms' Alexander
won her first bid for elected
office. Before that, she serv-
ed on the Southfield Plann-
ing Commission for seven
years.
Mr. Faxon suggests the
