(59.72), and also qualified for
the consolation heat in the
girls 15-16 400 134 but was
scratched from the race.
The other Detroit qualifier
was Linda Goldstein, who
struck gold with her first
place finish in the girls 15-16
400-IM (4:47.29), arguably
the toughest swimming race
in these games.
Amid the exciting corn-
petition, officials poolside
were hampered by recurring
computer problems, and the
results of the preliminary
races were slow to reach
them, causing some confu-
sion over who qualified for
what in the afternoon finals.
But despite the problems,
the mood of the swimmers
remained high, and the level
of competition was superior.
Apparently the adult prob-
lems involved with running
the events were confined to
the pool deck and didn't af-
fect the teenage swimmers
once the starting gun went
off. ❑
