workshops or purchasing
materials for the classroom
from exhibitors, for some the
highlight of the conference
came at night. Peter
Yarrow, a member of Peter,
Paul and Mary, and singer
Debbie Friedman performed
together during a Monday
evening concert.
Those who saw the concert
said Mr. Yarrow seemed to
reaffirm his Jewish identity
while singing a Hebrew song
with Ms. Friedman.
"If we as Jews can have an
affect on Peter Yarrow and
affect him as much as he has
had an influence on us for so
long, then I feel somewhat
proud," said Susan
Grossman, music specialist
at Ahavath Achim Syn-
agogue in Atlanta.

I NEWS

Maps Of Israel
Mix Up Emigres

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A recent-
ly arrived family of immi-
grants from the Soviet
Union refused to accept an
apartment in Acre, a city on
Haifa Bay, because they
were convinced it was out-
side Israel's borders.
The family, from Donetsk,
in the Ukraine, got their in-
formation from a 1947 atlas
published by the Soviet
government survey depart-
ment. The map of Palestine
showed it as it was parti-
tioned by the United
Nations into Jewish and
Arab states on Nov. 29,
1947.
The partition was never
implemented because
Israel's Arab neighbors at-
tacked the Jewish state the
day after it was founded on
May 14, 1948.
Had it been, not only Acre
but Nazareth, Nahariya and
many other Israeli cities
would have been outside its
boundaries.
The 43-year-old Soviet
atlas identifies Tel Aviv as
Israel's capital.

Travel Report
Enrages Official

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's
minister of tourism has an-
grily denied media reports
that the Persian Gulf crisis
has precipitated a large
number of cancellations of
trips to Israel and opened
the prospect of a sharp falloff
in Israel's tourist traffic.
In the United States,
meanwhile, tour operators
are saying that concern is
running high among those
planning to travel to Israel.
While there have been some
cancellations, they said, the
number has not been over-
whelming.
