SINGLE LIFE

It all came together to make the
JCC's annual summer BarBQ
Bash just that.

ou deserve a break
today," goes the old
jingle. And for
Detroit-area Jewish singles,
the weatherman couldn't
have sung it better.
The date was Aug. 1; the
location, the Maple-Drake
Jewish Community Center;
the event, the JCC's annual
singles Backyard Bar-B-Q

Hills prepares to dine, Dave
Lieberman of West Bloomfield en-
joys a swim and Marc Goodman,
West Bloomfield, indulges a
healthy appetite.

Bash, which had been push-
ed indoors by chill rains the
past two years.
But not this time. The first
summer bash of the new
decade came with Michigan
evening weather at its
finest: clear blue skies, a
slight breeze, temperatures
in the low 70s.

In a word: perfect!
And almost 580 area Jew-
ish singles 21 and over
showed up at the Center's
outdoor swimming pool patio
to eat, drink, socialize — and
enjoy the weather.
To be sure, there was one
report of trouble in paradise:
mosquitoes. But the young
woman who alleged the in-
vasion wasn't dismayed.
"You can't have every-
thing," she said happily.
With the smoke from the
barbecue pits wafting, ap-
propriately enough, away
from the crowd, appetites
were assuaged with helpings
from 225 pounds of ham-
burger, 70 pounds of beef
and 35 pounds of turkey hot
dogs, 250 servings of salad
and 62 pounds of spaghetti.
Thirsts were quenched with
more than 600 cups of pop,
beer and wine.
The evening afforded Jew-
ish singles the chance to see
old friends and catch up on
what they've been doing, as
well as meet new friends, ac-
cording to Leanie Gunsberg,
JCC singles director.
"People said they were
happy with the quality of the
crowd," she reported.
The weather was terrific,
but the Bash has had an im-
pressive track record of its
own, she said: the two "wet"
events of previous years
drew about 500 people each.
"The weather never stops
people from coming,"
Gunsberg said.
