Seven reasons to shop
House of Watchbands.
Sen: Jack Faxon:
Incumbent
Republicans might have
sought a Jewish candidate
because non-Jewish can-
didates have not done well
running against him.
"Maybe they thought the
Jewish community would be
influenced this way," Mr.
Faxon says. "Jewish people
have a good sense as to who
people are and I would doubt
if being Jewish is an issue in
this race."
Mr. Faxon says his 26-year
record speaks for itself.
Mr. Silver, treasurer of
The Oil Dispatch, which
operates a chain of quick-oil
change stores, is the son of
Probate Court Judge Sandra
Silver.
Although Mr. Silver says
he is not a politician, he is
entering the political arena
with a handful of issues to be
addressed. With a shoestring
budget of less than a few
thousand dollars, he intends
to canvass neighborhoods
door-to-door. And if there is a
debate, he will participate.
"The issues are out-of-
control government spen-

ding," Mr. Silver says.
"Property taxes, too, are an
issue. They need to be reduc-
ed radically."
Mr. Silver says Michigan's
Single Business Tax is a
major impediment to the
state economy because it
taxes payroll and not profits.
"I will do everything I can
to cut government spending
and to cut taxes so that in-
dividuals can have a chance
to earn money and run a
productive life.
"I am running for office to
represent all the citizens and
I think Jewish people have
always been self reliant and
I plan on advocating policies
which promote self
reliance."
In other races, Mr.
Honigman appears to be the
easy victor in his first bid for
the 17th state senate
district. He will face
Democrat William Foley of
Milford in the district with
heavy Republican leanings.
Republican Barbara Dobb
appears to be the winner of
the primary for the 24th
district seat being vacated
by Mr. Honigman.
The winner of the primary
is favored to defeat Dem-
ocratic challenger Marcia
Fligman, a teacher at Hillel
Day School, in the Repub-
lican district.
For the second time,
Republican Ben Mayers of
Southfield is attempting to
unseat House veteran Ms.
Berman. In 1988, Ms. Ber-
man easily defeated Mr.
Mayers.
Mr. Gubow is being
challenged by Republican
Fred Collins of Berkley for
the 67th state represent-
ative seat.
Mr. Leland will be
challenged by Republican
Cheryl Simon for the 1st
state representative
district.
