Shushanah Cheskis came
in from Skokie, Ill. . . . They
were friends since teenage
days when both attended
United Hebrew Schools .. .
Helen Schrage was here from
Hallandale, Fla.; Ann Man-
drow and Edith Gladstone .. .
These four women with
Sophie were good friends as
newlyweds from Pioneer
Women days when Chana
Michlin organized their group
over 40 years ago . . . Naomi
Floch, who Sylvia met at
UHS in 1928, was the second
high school grad from United
Hebrew Schools and later
taught for many years with
Detroit Board of Education
. . . Sophie graduated in
UHS's third class . . . Irwin
Shaw, former executive direc-
tor of the Jewish Community
Center, was also in the class.
Sophie and neighbor, Stella
Gavin, on North Martindale
and Burlingame, site of the
first Jewish Home for Aged,
have been friends 52 years .. .
When Sophie moved to Cher-
rylawn and Wyoming in 1952,
her friend and neighbor,
Frances Miller was a member
of Hadassah with her
throughout the years . . . Gail
Perlman, who lived on Penn-
ington, is also a former school
teacher with the Detroit
Board of Education . . . Her
son, Dr. Martin Pearlman,
and Sophie's son, Sanford,
have been friends throughout
the years . . . Dr. Pearlman is
a noted eye surgeon in East
Lansing and president of its
Conservative synagogue.
For 10 years, Sophie was
leader of a mental health
group at Beth Aaron
Synagogue called Recovery,
Inc., and May Helman
brought her husband suffer-
ing from Parkinson's Disease
to the meeting . . . Sophie and
May have been friends
throughout the years . . . May
now lives in the Hechtman
Federation Apartments .. .
Also at the party was an
Israeli student who Sophie
took in while her sons were in
college 30 years ago, Yeara
Gorfinkel (now Houras), who
looked upon Sophie as "my
American mother."
Surprise was grand-
daughter Gail Sulkes, recent
grad of Michigan State
University now working in
Greenwich, Conn., who
couldn't come to the party but
sent a singing telegram with
young gentleman from
Eastern Onion entertaining.
Was quite a happy 80th bir-
thday party for Sophie.

This month may not have a holiday—but
now you can celebrate anyway. We've declared
a Complimentary Dinner Month, just to get
a chance to meet you.
For a limited time, enjoy two delicious
entrees, but pay for just one.
And what entrees they are! juicy
roast prime rib. New York sirloin. Grilled
Atlantic swordfish. Dig into the double-
thick lamb chops or savor our weekly
Chef's special menu.
You'll love the Chocolate Marquis
for dessert—but you'll want to come back to
sample the Strawberries Rebecca. Celebrate
at the Atrium Cafe.
