Free Loan Society
Aids Immigrants
New York (JTA) — While
hundreds of groups are now
mobilizing to deal with the
influx of Soviet Jews enter-
ing the United States, there
is one organization that is
used to dealing with one of
the biggest problems new
immigrants commonly face:
lack of money.
When immigrants require
financial assistance, the
place to which they can turn
for interest-free loans is the
Hebrew Free Loan Society.
As Soviet families arrive
in the United States in
record numbers, the HFLS
has responded by granting
over $1.8 million in free
loans to these new arrivals.
"People come here anxious
and worried, some without
language skills or con-
fidence," says Arnold
Teitelbaum, HFLS executive
director. "However, there is
a tradition of morality and
ethics amongst us — our
payback rate is nearly 100
percent."
Over the past 98 years,
more than 1 million families
have been helped by the
society with interest-free
loans for retraining, college
tuition, housing, reset-
tlement and other needs.
The society was organized
on a December evening in
1892, when 11 immigrants
met at the Wilner synagogue
on Henry Street on the
Lower East Side. By the end
of the night, they had raised
$95 to help their neighbors.
Today, the HFLS corn-
mands more than $5.6 mill-
ion for individual loans of up
to $3,000, to be paid back
over a 10-month period.
