It, too, is broadcast for one hour on Sunday afternoons, with the first 30 minutes in Hebrew and the other half-hour in English. It is carried over a standard commercial sta- tion, which recently added a cable channel with access across the United States via satellite signal. Mr. Blazer says that by the end of the summer, his show will have been picked up by 100 cable systems in the major American cities. Blazer concentrates heavily on music, videos, interviews and news. What Jewish television ex- ists is centered mainly in Los Angeles. However, three re- cent developments have expanded the medium's reach to other U.S. cities, thanks largely to the conti- nuing growth of cable televi- sion. The Jewish Television Network (JTN) is the most comprehensive effort of its kind in the United States, with 10 hours of weekly pro- gramming carried over five cable systems in the Los Angeles area. Its schedule includes JTN News, focus- ing on Israeli and Jewish news, panel discussions, interviews, magazine-style and kosher cooking shows, and special movies and documentaries. Last month, the half-hour JTN News started airing by cable in the Washington D.C. area, and in late summer, San Diego will join the network. By the end of the year, it is hoped that Chicago and New York will pick up the news program as well, said spokeswoman Roni Blau. Ulpanay Israel/Israeli Television Network is the latest entry and, as the name indicates, is directed mainly at the estimated 150,000-plus Israelis in the Los Angeles area. Its weekly one-hour program on Sun- day afternoons consists of musical videos, sports results and entertainment from Israel, complemented by local talent and inter- views. To help bridge the gap between the American Jew- ish and Israeli communities and attract non-Hebrew speakers, all presentations carry subtitles in English. Ulpanay Israel was found- ed three months ago by four Israelis and is seen over four Los Angeles cable systems. Some interest in carrying the show in their cities has been expressed by Israelis in San Francisco, Miami and Seattle, said spokeswoman Rikki Rotberg. Stephen Solarz (D-N.Y.). Although some states have such laws, the bill introduc- ed by Mr. Solarz last Friday is the first effort to do so with federal legislation. The federal law, however, would not supersede a state law that is more stringent. Mr. Solarz, who represents a Brooklyn district with a large number of Orthodox Jews, credits Agudath Israel of America with showing him the need for the legisla- tion as well as helping him to draft it. "As the representative of the largest kashrut- observing community in the nation, I have become acute- ly aware of the pitfalls faced by those who seek to uphold this timeless Jewish tradi- tion," Mr. Solarz said. "There is no excuse for unscrupulous merchants to prey on kosher consumers," he said. He added that kosher pro- ducts have also become in- creasing popular among the general public "because they are prepared under carefully supervised conditions, and
