Jewish Women open-
ed its new upscale
thrift shop in downtown
Berkley earlier this week.
The new store replaces the
thrift shop on Van Dyke and
Eight Mile roads which was
losing money until NCJW
closed it in late March. NC-
JW's thrift store in Royal
Oak remains in operation.
Called the Council Bouti-
que, the Berkley store on 12
Mile Road features more
upscale merchandise than
its Royal Oak shop, said
NCJW volunteer Marsha
Gordon, who is in charge of
the thrift stores.
Quality used designer
label clothing for men, wo-
men and children, including
suits and casual outfits, will
be on the store racks, Ms.
Gordon said. Household
items will also be sold.
NCJW volunteers have
been renovating the
building since April in prep-
aration of the opening, Ms.
Gordon said. The store is
manned by four employees
and volunteers.
The thrift stores fund
about 55 percent of NCJW's
programs including Meals
on Wheels and the Educa-
tional Assistance Fund, Ms.
Gordon said. Clothing can be
donated at the Berkley store,
the Royal Oak store, or the
Fashion Spree office at Nine
Mile and Coolidge in Oak
Park.

Celebration and Concert will
take place Nov. 4 at the
Masonic Temple Auditorium.
Chairing the Balfour
Celebration Committee will
be Sherman Shapiro and
Anne Gonte Silver. Marge
Bennett-Kaufman will chair
the Women's Committee
assisted by Anne Brand, Nor-
ma T. Hudosh, Pauline Klein,
Billie Kramer and Helen
Ring as co-chairs. Irving
Laker will serve as Honorary
Celebration Chairman.
As honorary vice president
of Metro Detroit ZOA and one
of the founding members of
the Hillel Day School, Mr.
Shapiro has been associated
with the Jewish Welfare
Federation, Bar-Ilan Univer-
sity, Shaare Zedek Hospital,
B'nai B'rith and the Hebrew
Free Loan Society. He was the
1989 recipient of the Jewish
National Fund's Jerusalem
Award.
Anne G. Silver is an
honorary vice president of the
ZOA and vice president of
Metro Detroit ZOA. A practic-
ing attorney and civic leader,
she serves on the boards of
the JNF, Women of Maimoni-
des Medical Society, Women
Lawyers of Oakland County
and Israel Bonds. She was
cited by the Michigan State
Bar, Women Lawyers' Assoc-
iation of Michigan and the Ci-
ty of Beverly Hills. Mrs.
Silver was named the 1990
Wonder Woman by the
Woman's Survival Center of
S. Shapiro and A. Silver
Oakland County for her
"significant contributions to
the community and the lives
of women."
The Balfour Celebration's
kickoff brunch will be hosted
by Eileen and Dr. Alex Fried-
laender noon Aug. 19 at their
home in Bloomfield Hills. Na-
tional ZOA President Sidney
Silverman and ZOA's deputy
executive director, Howard
Stone, will address the
Balfour assembly.
