ed about Southfield and its
quality of education. He
wants it to be the finest in

"For me, it's an honor to be
the president," said Mr.
Kaplan, who is one of at
least three Jewish members
of the seven-member school
board. I enjoy presiding at
the meetings, and I enjoy
setting the agenda. But most
of all I love my community. I
only want to see the best for
it."
And as his former prin-
cipal, Mr. Smyth said, "I
wish him only the best. It's a
tough time to be in his posi-
tion. I remember him as be-
ing a member of one of our
first classes, and now to see
him as school board presi-
dent is a wonderful, wonder-
ful thing for all of us in the
school system. We're in good

Open House Picnic

Congregation Shaarey

Support Group

Jewish Family Service has
extended the registration of
the new support group ses-
sion, "Grandparents of Single
Parent Families." Interested
grandparents are encouraged
to participate. The group will
begin on Oct. 3 and meet on
Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3
p.m. for ten weeks.
The support group will be
