Trade Union Council
Honors Komer, Jarvis

The Michigan Trade Union
Council for Histadrut will
honor Odessa Komer, interna-
tional vice president UAW
and Hugh E. Jarvis, president
of Michigan Federation of
Teachers, with a testimonial
dinner Sept. 11 at Cobo Hall.
Mrs. Komer and Mr. Jarvis
will receive Histadrut's
Menorah Award, which is
presented annually to
outstanding leaders for
dedicated service to the cause
of labor.
Mrs. Komer, the UAW's
senior vice president, was
first elected in 1974 and has
been a vice president ever
since. She was elected and ap-
pointed to numerous posi-
tions of leadership and in
each instance, was the first
woman elected to the office in
the history of her local.
Mrs. Komer was instrumen-
tal in getting a seniority
clause into the local contract
which was later incorporated
into the National Ford
Agreement.
In 1967, she was appointed
to the staff of the Interna-
tional Union as education
director for Region 1, where
she organized _ and taught
education progranis for the
100,000 member region.
Mr. Jarvis, the president of
the Michigan Federation of
Thachers, was a junior high
school social studies teacher
for many years and was also

a member of the Detroit
Police Department.
Mr. Jarvis is chairman of
Northern Michigan Universi-
ty Board of Control. He is a
member of the Oakland
University Labor Advisory.
The speaker for the evening
will be Joyce D. Miller, vice
president and director of
social services of
Amalgamated Clothing and
Textile Workers Union.
The proceeds of the dinner
will be used to establish the
Odessa Komer and Hugh E.
Jarvis Perpetual Scholarship
Fund for the Afro Asian In-
stitute in Israel.
