PHILOSOPHY: Jim recalls hearing two comments on television about money and happiness. One stated that people should try to enjoy life and not worry about money. The other said that money can't buy happiness, but happiness can't buy groceries. Jim believes his philosophy is a melding of both statements. "You have to be able to enjoy yourself in health and in finance, especially in the world today." BACKGROUND: Jim Blum has lived in West Bloomfield since he was 3 years old. He attends Bloomfield Hills public schools and is active in sports and camping. As an elementary student, he joined the Cub Scouts and then continued with the Boy Scouts. At age 14 he received the Eagle Scout Award, the highest youth award from the Boy Scouts of America. In order to obtain this award, he needed to perform a community service activity and earn 21 merit badges. Most youths receive this award at age 16-18. "I had a burning desire to receive the Eagle Scout. You don't need immense brain power. Anyone can do it, you just need the desire?' says Jim. His community service project was at Bloomer Park in West Bloomfield. Jim built a path which gave easier access from the nearby subdivision to the entrance to the park. Some of his 21 merit badges included first aid, camping and environmental science. When Jim became involved in Boy Scouts several years ago, he was one of the only Jewish children in his group. Today he sees more Jewish involvement. This fall at Andover High School, Jim will enter the new model school. According to Jim, students will be able to establish what they want to work on, adhering to some set goals. "I'm excited. It's not sitting in desks. It's going to make learning more fun?' Next summer, he hopes to continue working with the Boy Scouts at their camp. He is looking forward to working with campers and their families. "I haven't met an obnoxious person in scouting yet." ❑ 'mm1 LOCAL NEWS rmilim Technion Society Hosts Alpert The American Thchnion Society will meet 7:30 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Maple-Drake Jewish Community Center.
