- I F katie s How to turn a paper plate into a $19.95 dinner for two. Family Dining DINNER FOR TWO did not consider it politically viable for the times." However, bit by bit, the ac- ting bug crept back into her soul, Ms. Catlin said. "It was the lure of musty curtains and all." Ms. Catlin's journey to Los Angeles began after a six- month sabbatical to Mexico. While there, she decided not to continue her education. Instead, Ms. Catlin moved to the San Francisco/Berkeley area to study mime and theater. Finally, she went to Los Angeles to try her hand at movies and television. After moving to Los Angeles, Ms. Catlin originally had trouble get- ting parts because, she was told, she looked too exotic or ethnic. Due to her dark com- plexion, people believed she looked Latin, Italian or even Persian. "Since that time, I've played everything from French women, to middle-of- the-road women to a coun- try-western singing star. It just goes to show you how tastes change out here," she said. In addition to her role in "Twin Peaks," Ms. Catlin has been featured in Steven Spielberg's television series "Amazing Stories," the TV series "thirtysomethingr a Showtime movie called Slow Burn, and the feature films Ghoulies and Maid to Order. Recently, Ms. Catlin fin- ished filming the movie Wildest Dreams, in which she portrays a coun- try/western singer. Ms. Catlin said she won the part of the Irish- Canadian madam, Blackie O'Reilly, simply by audition- ing for it. After a weekend audition, Ms. Catlin got a call from the series' casting director on Monday to meet with David Lynch, one of the shows co-creators and direc- tors. "They wanted me to be there in an hour, and this is driving halfway across LA," she said. After seeing a videotape of Ms. Catlin's audition, Mr. Lynch thought she might be too fragile for the role. "I walked in, looked him in the eye and said, 'I hear you think I'm not tough enough to play Blackie,' which got an interesting smile out of him. We proceeded to talk, and I got the role." Ms. Catlin hesitates to discuss roles she is working on because she enjoys letting her audience come to their own conclusions about her characters. "To me," she said, "it would be like putting an essay under a painting." 0 95 7 DAYS A WEEK FROM 4 p.m. • NO SUBSTITUTIONS • DINE IN ONLY nnan It doesn't take any magic to enjoy a great dinner offer in Southfield.
