T

hree names later ...
plus two locations ...
and an altogether new
look ... beckoned crowds of
invitees to a day of look-see
surprise as Too Chez
celebrated its opening.
First there was Hotel
Sheraton Oak's Raphael's .. .
then the move to a nearby
former automotive showroom
and the birth of Chez
Raphael's, both much above
the price range of many.
lbday, it's Too Chez, owned
by Toni Wisne, whose dad,
Tony Wisne, opened Novi's
Sheraton Oaks in October,
1981.
Restaurateurs among the
huge throngs were amazed at
the transformation and affor-
dable dishes by still Ex-
ecutive Chef Ed Janos,
without the staid look of
yesteryears.
Norm LePage, bossman of
Norm's Oyster Bar, Norm's
Eaton Street Station and Nif-
ty Norman's, and wife Bon-
nie LePage, general manager
of the Townsend Hotel, joined
with Lucille and Larry
Bongiovanni, head of the
Salvatore Scallopine chain, in
lauding the highly diversified
and clever surroundings of art
deco, modern and old
graphics, etc.
Also attending were
Manuel Chavez, Ristorante di
Modesta owner, whose
Manuel's Mexican restaurant
is slated somewhat for open-
ing in September at Morris
Margulies' Crosswinds Mall;
McVee's Herman Yagoda and
Molly; cute Mimi Passalac-
qua, Frank's daughter, and
day hostess at Mario's; Kathy
Passalacqua, Caucus Club
evening manager and Frank's
former sister-in-law; Mark
Patuk, day manager at
Mario's, Reza Ansari, former
manager at LaRotisserie in
Hyatt Regency Dearborn;
Joseph Vaghayenegar, for-
merly at La Rotisserie, now a
servitor at lbo Chez; Lou De
Cilis, head of Savino Ices,
didn't know how to dress, so
played it safe . . . bottom half
covered in dungarees and ten-
nis shoes, and top with tux
shirt, tux tie and tuxedo
jacket; Keith Aspinall, Too
Chez general manager;
Achille Bianche, dining room
manager; Pat Kilner,
Sheraton Oaks director of
sales; Frank Casalei, head
servitor; Adele Barbe, hostess.
Mel Ball, orchestra leader,

arranger and booker, and
Gail unbelievably married 20
years; Molly Abraham, Free
Press food critic, stunned
thinking that son Jimmy at
Maria's on Grand River is
25-years-old . . . Chez
Raphael's closed March 10
and re-opened as TDO Chez
with 140 seating in a com-
pletely different look . . .
Every time guests looked
about, they seemed to see still
another detail . . . Kitchen
and dining room both same
size . . . Those who like to
dine by the kitchen (and there
are many) have their own
separate glassed area that
seats 12 people . . . Caren
Nederlander, Edee Weiss,
Jerry Rosenfeld, Merle and
Jack Soloway, Julie Jacobson,
Jay and Debbie Wechler,
Naomi and Max Goldman,
Marcie Kogan.
And so three names later,
looks like Too Chez is here to
stay.

CONGRATS ... to Phil
and Anna Slomovitz . . . on
their 65th anniversary.
THOSE WHO saw second
half of "Murder Ordained"
recently on CBS probably
noticed the resemblance
between Claudia Kaplan
Mandelbaum and Elizabeth
Applebaum, Jewish News
assistant editor . . . Good
reason since Claudia is Liz's
mom . . . Elizabeth may not
be the actress mother is, but
I'll bet Claudia can't write
like her daughter.
1940
WILL
BE
remembered by many for in-
teresting facts and events .. .
but to 18 couples, the year
was too eventful to forget .. .
as is 1990, when they all
celebrated their 50th anniver-
saries together . . . And where
else, but at the 1940 Chop
House on E. Jefferson for din-
ner and dancing.
Aaron and Millie Berg,
Boyd and Ruth Carnick,
Charles and Ruth Dodge from
Flint, Harold and Ruth
Garber, Boris and Florine
Gaynes, Max and Sylvia
Goldstein, Ben and Sarah
Gurvitz, Erwin and Sylvia
Harvitz, Irving and Miriam
Kramer, Jerome and Ethel
Marx, Jack and Dorothy
Milen, Jud and Esther Mor-
rison from East Lansing, Abe
and Sylvia Pearlman,
Howard and Faye Rice, Lester
and Margareit Satovsky, Jack
and Miriam Shenkman,
Frank and Dorothy Thssler
and Sidney and Melba Winer.
POLO COMES to the
heart of a city as second an-

nual Southfield Gold Cup
competition is held 2 p.m.
Aug. 19 at Duns Scotus, Nine
Mile and Evergreen . . . Last
year's first polo competition
in Southfield was a huge suc-
cess, with more than 2,500
attending.
CONGRATS ... to Anna
Weisberg . . . on her 100th
birthday . . . Party for Anna
will be this Sunday at Bor-
man Hall.
IF YOU OWN a Japanese-
made car and want to swear
at it in its native tongue, or
know someone interested in
the language, gals of
Brandeis University National

Too Chez is a
transformation for
Ed Janos and Toni
Wisne.

Women's Committee have a
treat in store at the 1990
Brandeis Used Book Sale, the
29th annual.
Japanese lady sold her con-
do to a Brandeis member and
asked what to do with a lot of
the printed hardcovers and
paperbacks she had to dispose
of . . . The member suggested
giving them to Brandeis .. .
and they'll be on sale along
with over 200,000 books Aug.
15, from 9:30 p.m. to mid-
night, through Aug. 22 at
Thl-12 Mall, Thlegraph and 12
Mile.
GET WELL wishes . . . to
Lenny Silber . . . to Harold
Weiss . . . to Shirley Frank.
ELAINE RAZNICK and
her partner, Marlene Bresler,
were on the 15th hole at Tam
O'Shanter Country Club, and
couldn't figure where Elaine's
ball had gone after her tee
shot . . . Sure couldn't miss it,
the ball's color being lavender
. . . but it was nowhere to be
found . . . That is, except one
place . . . in the cup . . . Don't
know who yelled first or the
loudest, but sure enough,
there it was . . . Elaine had
stroked a hole-in-one on the
par three 135-yarder.
REUNION DEPT. . . .
Southfield-Lathrup class of
1980 has its 10-year shindig
Nov. 24 at Hyatt Regency
Dearborn . . . Call the school,
746-7200 . . . For info about
Southfield High class of 1965,
Aug. 25, call Sheraton Oaks
in Novi, 348-5000 .. .
1959-1960 classes of Central

Lo moonlight, dinner-dance
and family picnic) Aug. 24, 25
