Cape Cod

Continued from Page 62

nual cantorial concert held at
the synagogue every August,
with eight cantors from the
Greater Boston area par-
ticipating. "We have such an
influx of Jewish people to the
Cape in summer that it seem-
ed a natural place to hold
such a concert," says Malin,
who originated the idea four
years ago.
Malin also helped launch
an annual interfaith choir
festival. "Relations between
Jews and non-Jews are very
good," says Malin, a member
of the Interfaith Committee of
the Cape Cod Council of
Churches. "We try to keep a
dialogue going between our
two communities!'
And, though Jews are only
1 percent of the population,
they are active in all aspects
of Cape Cod life. Jewish own-
ed busineses in Hyannis in-
clude Puritan, the largest
clothing store on the Cape;
Myers Furniture on Main
Street in Hyannis; Signature,
an art gallery; and the Chart
House book store in the
Village Marketplace.
Inside the Chart House,
separate shelves are set aside
for Judaica books. "Right
from the start, we've carried
books of Jewish interest;' says
John Goldrosen, who, with
his mother, Ruth, owns the
store. His customers for
Judaica include the year-
round Jewish Cape Codders,
as well as summer visitors
from Boston and elsewhere,
including Canada.
They can choose from a
varied selection of books of
Jewish interest. And what he
doesn't have in stock,
Goldrosen will special order
for customers. Recently, he
ordered books on the Talmud
for a local Cape Codder, and
a Hebrew and Yiddish dic-
tionary for another. Besides
books on Jewish interest, the
Chart House also stocks
Jewish New Year's cards,
Chanukah cards, and Jewish
calendars.
Those hungry for ethnic
food after their book browsing
can find it at the newly open-
ed Bagel Land of Cape Cod, at
North and Winter Streets,
just a block from the
synagogue.
Here Bert Antonik prepares
19 varieties of water bagels,
including egg and onion,
whole wheat with oat..bran,
and rye with caraway seeds.
Other specialities include
bialys, bagel sticks, bagel
chips and bagel sandwiches
with whitefish salad.
"We only do bagels," says
Antonik, waiting on a
customer who ordered a bagel
dog.
Antonik, who opened in
early July, is doing a brisk
business.
