devoting a major effort to
translating into Polish the
Vatican documents and
various statements by Pope
John Paul II condemning
anti-Semitism as well as
other statements dealing
with Catholic-Jewish rela-
tions.
Statements by the Polish-
born pope is one of the most
effective weapons against
anti-Semitism because of the
reverence for him in his na-
tive country, Muszynski
said.
Rabbi A. James Rudin, di-
rector of interreligious af-
fairs for the AJCommittee,
who accompanied Muszyn-
ski to Washington, said that
some 80 percent of American
Jews can trace their
ancestry to Poland.
Many believe Poland has
always been "the land of an-
ti- Semitism, the most anti-
Semitic country in Europe,"
and that for many American
Jews, "it's painful to even
talk about." That is why
Jews must work on reaching
an accommodation with
Poland, Rudin said.
He said not only is Poland
seeking to come to terms
with its Jewish history
under the new regime, but
many Poles are visiting
Israel, and there is now an
Israeli ambassador in War-
saw.
"I urge my fellow Jews to
stop Polish jokes," Rudin
said. "When you go to
Poland, its not a joke. They
are very brave people. How
would you like to live bet-
ween Russia and Germany
all of your life?" he asked. ❑

Israeli Navy
Needs Subs
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Israeli navy, which chalked
up an impressive record re-
cently, sinking a terrorist-
manned rubber dinghy, will
be reduced to "a virtual
coast guard" unless it gets
new submarines, according
to navy commander Adm.
Micha Ram.
Adm. Ram, who spoke to
reporters on the eve of
Thursday's Navy Day, is
lobbying hard for two
Dolphin-class submarines
West Germany is to build for
Israel. They would replace
Israel's three Gal-class sub-
marines.
But the project is in danger
because of budgetary con-
straints.
