TORAH PORTION

We Cannot Be Careless
About Our Blessings

RABBI RICHARD HERTZ

Special to The Jewish News

T

his week's sedra de-
scribes a dramatic mo-
ment in the book of
Deuteronomy. It tells a lesson
that should be read by
everyone and memorized
every day.
The children of Israel has
been wandering for 40 years
in the desert with memories
of misery, oppression and
slavery. Under the great
leadership of Moses, they had
at last come to the eastern
banks of the Jordan River.
Before them lay the Promis-
ed Land, a land flowing with
milk and honey. At that
dramatic moment Moses
preached a long sermon,
history's first "farewell ad-
dress," to his people. He knew
he would not be leading his
people into the Promised
Land.
Moses feared that in their
new prosperity, the people
would forget the God who had
led them to this land. "Man
doth not live by bread alone.
Beware," he said, "lest thou
forget the Lord thy God when
thou hast eaten and are full
and have built goodly houses
and dwelt there. And when
thy flocks multiply and thy
silver and thy gold that thy
heart be lifted up and thou
forget the Lord thy God .. .
Beware, lest thou should say

emeritus of Temple Beth El.

in thy heart, my power and
the might of my hand have
gotten this wealth."
Moses was trying to tell his
people that they should never
forget the source of all bless-
ings. He wanted them to have
thankful hearts.
A thankful heart for coun-
ting our blessings is
something each of us needs
today, even in the midst of the
most trying and difficult cir-
cumstances. Gratitude is the
result of appreciation, and ap-
preciation is the core of hap-
piness. Our Torah portion has
a lesson that we should never
forget, we who live in subur-
bia surrounded by comforts
and conveniences of the af-
fluent society.
How few people know how
to count their blessings! In
our mad race for the pursuit
of material success, we seem
capable of concentrating only
on what we lack, not on what
we have. It's the new home
our neighbor has . . . the new
car our friend has . . . the new
color TV our mother-in-law
has . . . the new mink coat our
competitor's wife has — as if
the blessings to be counted
are all material things that
someone else has!
In our false pride there are
so many things we take for
granted. Health, until we lose
it; life, until it hangs in the
balance; love, until it is lost;
opportunity, until it is
wasted.
It is so easy to become
careless about our blessings,

If you're nodding yes, we welcome you to a
whole new experience. The joy of staying
awake during temple services, because you
enjoy the services.
And there's lots more to hold your atten-
tion at The Birmingham Temple. You can
experience the joy of holiday celebration
without prayer, of mitsva and life-cycle
celebrations that are relevant and mean-
ingful. Your children can attend a
Hebrew School and Sunday School
that connect to their life experiences.
You'll enjoy a community of friends

who experience their Jewish identity in the
same unconventional way you do.
So, please join us for an informal evening
with the Rabbi on Aug. 13 or Aug. 22 at 7:30.
Meet Rabbi Sherwin Wine and find out
about the Birmingham Temple and Human-
istic Judaism. Learn about our history,
philosophy, celebrations, educational pro-
grams, family involvement and activities.
For information and to R. S.V. P.,
call our Executive Director, Helen
• Forman at 477-1410. It could be an
eye-opener for you.
