Reform And Gays

Continued from Page 7

cepted, the status of women
remained particularly low.
Ancient Greece, according to
all the classical scholars I
read, held women in a ter-
ribly inferior position, very
much related to its celebra-
tion of male-male love.
Greece, the highest ancient
civilization outside of the
Jewish, venerated man-boy
love. In Greece, as in much of
the world, women were for
procreation and boys were for
sexual love. It was Judaism
that initiated marital
eroticism, and thereby
singlehandedly made mar-
riage more than a baby pro-
ducing arrangement .. .
Marital sex is a Jewish
ideal that made Western
civilization possible, and
family life has been one of the
glories of Jewish history. It is
sad beyond words that a nor-
mative Jewish movement
has, with good intentions cer-
tainly, joined with those who
no longer hold the marital
sexual ideal .. .
What will happen when a
homosexual Reform rabbi
brings his or her lover to tem-
ple on Shabbat? What will
parents worshipping there
tell their children when the
children ask who that person
is? Will the parents tell the
truth? And if so, aren't they
then telling their children
that Judaism finds homo-
sexuality and sexual life out-
side of marriage perfectly
ideal, ideal enough to be the
way in which the rabbi acts?
Or will the parents lie, and
if so, how can a movement or-
dain rabbis about whose
lifestyle its members are
ashamed to report to their
children?
And what about incest? If
loving sex between adults of
the same sex is now Jewishly
valid, why not loving sex bet-
ween adult brothers and
sisters? Once the hetero-
sexual marital door is official-
ly opened, where will it close?
With all good intentions,
the Reform rabbinate voted to
bestow the highest title in
Judaism to Jews who public-
ly claim that same-sex love is
as Jewish an ideal as man-
woman love and marriage.
This is, as many Reform rab-
bis who disagree with this
decision have told me, the one
great departure from
Judaism in Reform life. It is
not comparable to Reform's
decision on patrilineal des-
cent — that was a break with
normative Jewish law, but
this is a break with a fun-
damental Jewish value. And
while there was a time when
Jews were Jewish by
patrilineal descent, there was
never a time in the Jews'
history that Jews accepted

homosexuality or any assault
on the hard-won gain of keep-
ing sex within marital
bounds.
There is hope. The Reform
seminary has yet to change
its practice in accord with the
CCAR ruling. And we have
yet to hear from the majority
of Reform rabbis who were
not present in Seattle.
There is a parallel here
with psychiatry. In 1973,
after intense pressure from
gay organizations and some
liberal psychiatrists, the
American Psychiatric Associ-
ation voted to remove homo-
sexuality from its list of il-
lnesses. But as reported later
in psychiatric journals, most
psychiatrists disagree with
that decision. The activists
had their way at the meeting.
So, too, activist Reform rab-
bis and gay groups had their
way in Seattle. But almost no
Reform rabbis with whom I
have been in contact agree
with that decision, which was
made after a one-sided, one-
hour discussion, in a voice
vote, with a fraction of the
Reform rabbinate present.
If Reform Jews call for a
secret vote among rabbis in
the CCAR, we are likely to
see a very different result.
Moreover, I am convinced
that when many Reform
rabbis who voted yes read a
compassionate, non-homo-
phobic, historically-based ar-
gument against accepting
homosexuality as equally
valid to heteroseual marriage,
they will change their minds.
And for the sake of Reform
Judaism, these rabbis must
change their minds. Or the
great movement of Abba
Hillel Silver (who wrote
Where Judaism Differed, not
Where Judaism was Similar),
Gunther Plaut and Eugene
Borowitz will become irrele-
vant to Judaism, in-
distinguishable from a socie-
ty that is increasingly rud-
derless. ❑
