Now, it appears likely that
the dominant topic will be
Iraq's bludgeoning of its
neighbors, and the urgent
need to contain Mr. Hussein.
The week's dramatic
events will also help shore
up Israel's sagging support
in Congress.
"First, it should remind
everyone of the debt which is
owed the Israelis for knock-
ing out Iraq's nuclear
capability," Mr. Berman
said. "Saddam Hussein has
used every weapon of mass
destruction he's ever been
able to acquire; he was try-
ing to obtain nuclear
weapons, and he's back on
that course again. Thank
God he doesn't have them
NOW."
In addition, Mr. Hussein's
attack on Kuwait, Mr. Ber-
man said, would prove that
even after the end of the
Cold War, Israel will con-
tinue to be an important
strategic asset for this coun-
try.
"Of all the countries in the
region, only Israel has the
clear ability to deter him,"
Mr. Berman said. "This in-
vasion will have the impact
of reminding people that,
with all of Israel's problems
and all of our concerns about
the peace process, it's good to
have a strong, democratic,
pro-Western Israel — not as
a strategic asset in terms of
the Cold War, but as a force
for stability in the Middle
East."
The anemic response of
Iraq's frightened Arab
neighbors only reinforced
the point that Israel is the
only reliable ally in a part of
the world vital to this coun-
try's interests.
Pro-Israel activists were
less sanguine about the
sudden re-appearance of oil
politics on the international
scene.
The Iraqi attack revealed
to a sleeping Western world
the extent to which this
country has once again
become dependent on Middle
East oil. There are strong
concerns about the use of the
Arab oil weapon against the
United States — and about
how such economic disloca-
tions could affect the pro-
Israel agenda in this coun-
try.
"We're beginning to look
at a very scary prospect,"
said an official with a major
Jewish organization here.
"This thing brings up the
specter of oil politics all over
again. This is a very troubl-
ing development, both in
terms of international issues
and in terms of our domestic
concerns." ❑
