Jewish Agency
Opens Office
In Warsaw
Jerusalem (JTA) — Jewish
Agency Chairman Simcha
Dinitz officially opened an
office in Warsaw last week,
re- establishing the agency's
formal presence in Poland
for the first time since World
War II.
The office has a staff of
three, to assist Polish Jews
and Jews in neighboring
countries and those im-
migrating to Israel from the
Soviet Union by way of
Poland.
Dinitz, upon his return
from Warsaw, reported to
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir on his talks with the
Polish prime minister,
Tadeusz Mazowiecki, and
other Polish officials.
He said he had
underscored in his talks
with Polish authorities that
Jewish leaders are following
with great interest Poland's
assistance to Soviet Jewish
immigrants, a factor that
would enhance Poland's
image among Jews.
New Technique
Affects Fertility
New York (JTA) — A new
technique expected to dra-
matically increase the
chances of in-vitro fertiliza-
tion, even in couples where
the husband is apparently
infertile, is currently being
tested at Hadassah Univer-
sity hospital.
According to leading in-
vestigator Dr. Neri Laufer of
the in-vitro fertilization
unit, the method involves
the micromanipulation of
human egg cells by a laser
beam.
The technique represents a
breakthrough in the treat-
ment of infertility. "One of
the main problems with or-
dinary IVF procedures is
that we have not had an ac-
ceptable medical solution to
male infertility," Laufer
said.
The procedure utilizes a
specially designed laser
beam to drill a minute hole
into the thick, hard outer
shell of the egg. This open-
ing creates an opportunity
for the sperm, however
weak, to pass through and
fertilize the egg.
Preliminary results are
extremely encouraging: In
15 couples previously
unresponsive to in-vitro fer-
tilization techniques, 21 per-
cent have had eggs fertilized
with the husband's sperm
using the new method.
